A DREAM COME TRUE

When Khun Kian Kai, Mayor of Nong Phub met Luke Murray who visited his grandmother near Nong Soar, said to him- "Why do you not bring your whole football team over here to Thailand?" We all thought that cannot be possible and will only remain a dream. This conversation took place some 12 months ago.
Shortly after, Grandma Ingrid sponsored a Nong Phub team and presented them with their shirts, which was arranged by then Deputy Mayor, Khun Sawat Boonyoo. See photo. In August last year Ingrid was asked to sponsor her grandson Luke Murray's team and presented them with shirts and shorts.
The East Cowes F.C. on the Isle of Wight, England were delighted, and their Manager/Coach Karen Taylor said, "Well may be we should try and get sponsorship to travel to Thailand with the team?! After all we have already been to Amsterdam and Italy, why not Thailand?
The Country Press on the Isle of Wight published the first article about this and several generous donations were received.
There then followed a lot of hard work by Karen and her team, with interviews on local Radio and articles in the papers. In October last year Ingrid, who had returned to Thailand, received a phone call to say that they had enough money together and would be booking the flight shortly.
The East Cowes football team, from the Isle of Wight, will be arriving in Hua Hin on Wednesday 31st March 2004, with their Captain Luke Murray and Manager / Coach Karen Taylor, along with12 players and 5 helpers.
The former Deputy Mayor of Nong Phub Khun Sawat Boonyoo has arranged some 5 to 6 matches for the team, together with his helpers K. Supot, K. Sanong, and K. Viroth, who are teachers at schools. They will be playing at Prachuabkirikhan, Petchaburi, Sam Roi Yod, Hua Hin and Nong Phub. Khun Suwat Boonyoo will be presenting a trophy to the winning team and the runners up .
The team who are all aged between 17 and 18, also intend to do some sight seeing in their spare time and trips to the River Kwai, floating market, Pala-U waterfall and Khoa Talu are planned.
Everyone is very excited about the forthcoming visit and we wish them all well.

FUN FOR ALL AT PALM HILLS

Last month Palm Hills Golf and Country Club hosted their annual fun day. Members and guests played golf in a three tier Ryder Cup match between blues and whites, while the staff split themselves into teams with lots of noise and excitement in tug ‘o war, and cheerleading events.

Dr Narongchai’s white team lost the trophy this year and nobody minded as this golf match was played very much in the spirit of the game.

The fun continued into the evening with a mouth-watering buffet served in front of the green on the 18th fairway.

Dr Narongchai in white hands the trophy to Former Minister Dr Amnuayvirawan, captain of the blue team. Below caddies and Palm Hills staff pit their skills in a series of challenges.

CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT AT GOLF TOURS BAR

Hua Hin's first International Team Cribbage
Championship (actually just a booze up in the bar) Teams were from England, Canada and Thailand. Thailand, represented by Khun Sek and Mick Wittering, took the trophy beating England by 10 points in an enthralling contest after Canada were eliminated at the first hurdle.

Muay Thai

by Marc
For people interested in watching some real good Thai Boxing, Hua Hin offers two spots where weekly fight nights are held. On Sundays and Thursdays at the Grand Sports Arena, in front of the Grand Hotel. On Tuesdays and Fridays you're welcomed at Mr. Chop Rawee's Thai Boxing Garden, located on Poonsuk Road, behind the Temple, near City Beach Hotel.
Both venues are open to the public from 9.00 p.m. on fight nights and tickets vary from ß300,- at the Grand Sports to ß250,- at the Thai Boxing Garden.
Mostly 5 matches are held on every night, so you'll be back in your room somewhere 'round midnight. To announce each fight as well as each fighter, both GS and Thai Boxing Garden offer English speaking hosts too. During the whole evening they will explain a little about Muay Thai basics and rules and regulations of the fights.
On one of these nights just a few weeks ago, I saw a match between a local boxer, Nong Boy born in Hua Hin and Oley, an army sergeant currently stationed in an army camp near Suan Son -Beach, a few miles behind Kao Ta Kiap (or Monkey Mountain). As the two fighters were equal in weight, height and experience it promised to be an exciting match. And it was!! If you take a good look at the pictures you can see the tension in their faces and the total concentration in their eyes.
Almost like a wild hungry predator approaching his prey a Thai boxer looks patiently for an opportunity to attack his opponent with full force.
Although it is a full contact sport, injuries or major bloodshed rarely occur. Muay Thai is a clean sport and it can be so beautiful to watch the high kicks and other gracious movements, almost like ballet attimes.
Come and see for yourself and enjoy an exciting and entertaining evening in one of Hua Hin's stadiums. For info on matches and Thai boxing seminars or self defense courses please send an e-mail to MuayThaischool@hotmail.com.
