Fit for Golf
Last month the subject was the importance of correct stretching prior to playing a round of golf and how it can help with the round and it's after effects. This time I want to go through a couple "functional" exercises that can be done to develop your game and make the body stronger for everyday life as well. For those of you who don't keep up with the trends in the fitness industry here is a brief run down of what functional exercises are.
The inner abdominal muscles help to stabilise the pelvis and protect the back. By working on them the control we have over this area is greater and hence less chance of a swing being off centre and of the back aching after a round. To check that these muscles are working a simple test can be done while exercising. Lie on the floor on your back with the feet on the ground and knees
bent to 90 degrees. On the front of the hips you will have a prominent bony point on each side. Once you have found this then move your fingers 2 centimetres towards the centre of the body. To engage the inner muscles you have to draw the stomach in but keep the back still. One other explanation of this is it is like putting on a pair of trousers that are a bit too small.
Don't pull in too much or too quickly as the outer muscles will fire and the back will flatten. This a great exercise for the ladies as it flattens the stomach and doesn't create a bulge which sit-ups sometimes do.
Now the right muscles are working you can use them while doing the following exercises. Starting on hands and knees, place the hands under the shoulders with the elbow pointing towards the knees. The knees under the hips. Engage the inner abdominal muscles as previously described. Lift the right knee and left hand off the ground just high enough to slip a piece of paper under them. Hold that position for 10 seconds and go on the the other side, left knee/right hand, for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times on each side.
Lying on your side knees bent to 90 degrees and feet in line with the buttocks place both arms out in front at shoulder height held straight. Engage the abdominals as before and then bring the top arm, still straight across the body still at shoulder height. Go all the way back rotating the back and opening the
chest up. Make sure the hips stay still and the legs don't move. Bring the arm back to the start position. Repeat 10 times. Breath out as the arm travels outwards and breath in when it returns.
Try these exercises and see what difference it makes to your game and your body.
