Fit for Golf

This month the focus is on posture and how that can help or hinder the swing. The best way to check to see how good or bad your posture is to stand side on to a mirror, look sideways at your reflection and take in the view. What you should see in the back is a slight outward curve in the shoulder blade area and a slight inward curve in the lower back area. With the arm relaxed down at the side you should be able to draw a line from the outside tip of the shoulder down to the bone that juts out from your ankle passing over the midline of the top of the thigh bone. If this is not the sight you see then some work needs to be done.

As in previous articles I bestowed the benefit of having a functional body. If the posture is bad the body cannot function to it's full capability. Not only does it help the game of golf but it also helps the game of life. Tight muscles are the main cause of bad posture. There are many techniques to relieve the spasm of a muscle, stretching is just one way to improve the pliability of the muscle fibres. Some of the techniques I use are designed to let the body stretch out the muscle in it's own time. To explain in more detail. When a muscle is in spasm, that is to say shortened, it is because the body is protecting an area that is under strain. For example if your back is in spasm it is because there is a structure, ligament or joint maybe, under pressure. The muscle tightens to stop you using that area and give it time to repair. Sometimes the muscles don't relax from the spasm and there is tightness long after the repair has finished. This is when some therapy is needed. I use a modality known as Positional Release Therapy. In this technique the muscles are shortened even further. By doing this the muscle fibres are taken to a position that the body is trying to achieve. Kept in that position for a period of time the brain will give the signal to the nerve endings to stop tightening the muscle fibres and the spasm will relax. This will bring the muscles back to their original length and give the bones the chance to re-align, hence correcting the posture.

More remedial work will be needed to get the body strong in areas that have been unused or misused over the years. Some of the exercises I have previously mentioned but there are many more available. Only once the body has been corrected can it function properly and have the freedom to move, allowing you to swing the golf club and not be inhibited by a limited range of movement.
