Fit for Golf
This month the subject is strength training. Once the body is functioning properly and flexibility is good the muscles can be worked on to add more power to the game. This doesn't entail big heavy weights, on the contrary, for most of you a muscle bound body will not be flexible enough to give you a good swing. To perform the following exercises you will need something that weighs about 1 to 5 kgs. Also because you will be asked to throw the weight you will need something soft for it to land on, this we will call the landing pad.
Though the movements look as though they have nothing to do with golf they are still strengthening the body giving more power. Firstly to strengthen the shoulders stand side on to your landing pad. Keep the elbow into the side and bend the arm about 90o. Turn the lower arm out as far as is comfortable and throw the 1 kg weight at your landing pad. Then turn change hands and turn the arm in as far as it is comfortable and throw towards landing pad. This will strengthen the rotators in the shoulders and add more power as well as increasing stability to the shoulder area. Once you have completed 10 repetitions on one side turn round and exercise the other side.
Turning the torso is a major part of the golf swing so adding to the power of this area will give more force to the club and further distance. You may need the 5kg weight for this one. Stand side on to the landing pad with the body and weight turned away from said landing pad. Hold the weight close to the body as not to strain the shoulders and turn towards the landing pad throwing the weight at the pad. Repeat 10 times and then turn round to throw it in the opposite direction. All of the body can move so shift the body weight from one leg to the other and turn the hips and legs also. It is useful to breathe out as you throw the weight to help with the release. By working the rotating muscles in the torso you will increase speed helping to hit further and have the control to maintain body position.
The above exercises are better performed under supervision with the right equipment so if you are interested in improving the power of your body to hit the ball further then contact Terry at www.fit-foregolf.com or ring me on 01 0096588 .
