Fit for Golf

There is many a round of golf that starts well and fizzles out as you get towards the last few holes. This can be attributed to quite a few things but one of the reasons is the body tiring and the concentration slipping. By increasing the cardio-vascular fitness of the body both the mind and the muscles will be able to last longer.

Here are some simple exercises that can be performed while not having to go to a gym. Firstly find a set of stairs and walk up them. Can't be much more simple. If you live in a condo that has a lift walk up the stairs and come back down in the lift. This is kinder on the knees. If you don't have a lift and don't want to travel down the stairs then step up and down on the bottom step. Keep a comfortable pace going and if you feel that it is getting too tough stop and return on another day. As with all the exercises I have prescribed make sure they are manageable and don't over exert yourself. As you complete more sessions you will find it easier to increase the time spent exercising.

Walking is part of the game of golf, for most people. To make the round easier to complete and stop your body aching for days after a game get out and do some walking away from the course. If there are hills near then use them to increase your stamina. Again don't overdo it. Pick a time of the day that is not too hot and make sure you have plenty of water with you.

If the impact of walking on hard surfaces can be uncomfortable on your body, be it knees, back or feet then try walking in water. For those of you with access to a pool this is a great way to take the pressure off of the joints but still get the heart and lungs working and if you don't have a pool you can use, then walking waist deep in the sea is equally as effective.

Before starting any exercise regime makes sure that you know your body is capable of the workload. If in any doubt arrange a medical check up to determine your state of health.

Fit Fore Golf

Outsider Wins Molars Trophy in Hua Hin

The last week in April was set for HKCC's top golfers to descend on Hua Hin to do battle for the Molars Trophy. Hot favourite was once again James Jenks, who co-incidentally was also handicap adjudicator. A number of noses were put out of joint when the handicaps were announced, not least Arthur Barnett who cornered Jenks in the top bar for an explanation as to why he was giving Jenks 15 shots. The Jenks explanation of “I'm the benchmark” was not well received. An early casualty was Jim Neilson who had to take care of some rising damp. Another with medical problems was Lawman who suffered a badly dislocated thumb. However, he passed a late fitness test and has promised to heed the doctor's advice and use cotton buds in future. McKinney came by private jet from his castle in Edinburgh and Hardie from the Antipodes after a late scare when his horse cast a shoe on the way to the airport.

A fine array of new Pings and Callaways were being flaunted, the owners of which received a nasty shock at Bangkok Airport when Roger Perrin mischievously spread rumours that Thai Customs were having a crackdown on offenders against the Intellectual Property Regulations. No such problems for Scales. He swaggered in with an almost complete set of Tommy Armour clubs acquired at a knock-down price after a bit of haggling with the lady in the Oxfam shop.

After a week of fierce competition, tens of fans lined the 18th fairway of the Majestic Golf Club in Hua Hin to see rank outsider, John Hunter, win his first golfing major - the Molars Trophy. Donning the pink jacket, an emotional Hunter said, “It is hard to describe the feeling after fifty years of losing.” Local publican and runner up, Ray Kite, was bitterly disappointed. “I could have won this if it was played on a decent course. The fairways were crap and the greens were worse. Hunter may be used to playing on sheep fields in Australia but I am not”, Kite observed.

John Hardie, a member of the Handicapping Committee, who was followed on every round by a pack of stray dogs said, “I honestly thought any one of these dogs had a better chance than Hunter, but then, every dog has its day.” Hardie's colleague on the Handicapping Committee, Jim Jenks added, “This years field was very competitive with veteran professionals like Arthur Barnett who only uses two clubs - a three iron and a putter. How do you give no hopers like Hunter a chance against Barnett? I think John and I did a superb job of fixing the handicaps.”
