Fit for Golf

One of the early articles put out was about the need to be more flexible. This month I am going to help you use stretching as a technique for continually improving your flexibility and also a technique to give good movement around the joints.

If the muscles are shortened or just tight a programme of stretching to improve range of motion should be followed. The technique used here involves holding the stretch for a period of about 10 seconds. This will re-educate the brain to accept the new range of movement so you can go to that position the next time you need to. For example; lets look at stretching the back of the thigh. First you must first get into a position that is most effective for the stretch. There are many ways to stand or sit while performing the stretch. To make sure you dont struggle too much I suggest you sit on a chair. Place one leg straight out in front of you and relax the other. Make sure your back is also straight and shoulder blades are pulled in lightly to the middle of the back. Lean forward from the hips, not the back, and go forward as far as you can until you feel a comfortable stretch in the back of the thigh. Hold it this position for about 10 seconds, no less than 6 seconds, then lean forward a bit more. You should be able to increase the stretch and bring the torso nearer to your knees. Maintain good posture throughout. Eventually you will hit a block in the joint and that is where you leave it for the day. Practice this technique on all the areas that need to have flexibility improved.

The stretching technique above is good to improve pliability and muscle function. This is good for long term improvement but does not help if you are about to play a round. A technique that is useful before you go out to play is dynamic stretching. The example that most people see on the course is someone with a club across the shoulders twisting their body. Because the body is moving the nerves that work the muscles are having to fire more. This gives improved movement to the muscles and in turn the joints. With this the swing will have less chance of going wrong as the body does not have to compensate for lack of movement.
