Hua Hin Golf Society

Sam Sheriff is the 2005 Match Play Champion

On Thursday 17th November he beat Steve Ross 4 and 3 at the Lake View Lay out. In the same group Peter Dunne (hcp 5) beat Jill Moore (hcp 15) 1 up in a thrilling match for the Plate (open to 1st round losers). The course was in excellent condition but the preferred lies were applied on the fairways due to overnight rain.

The stroke play championship (against handicap) will have been played by the publication of this issue and the result will be in January's edition.

Charity Scramble and Christmas Dinner

The date is 21st December and these are at the Lake View and Dusit Resort and Polo Club respectively.

Palm Hills

Unfortunately we could not come to an agreement with their management over tee times and prices, so we have no fixtures there until May 2006.

Fit for Golf

This is the first part of a two part article on the link between obesity and lower back pain.

In a lot of circles golf is viewed as a leisure sport that requires little or no level of physical fitness to participate. But just think of what is involved when swinging a golf club. The body needs to be able to accelerate and decelerate the club at high speeds as well as moving through different planes i.e. lifting up, bending forward and twisting. To be able to do this there has to be a good level of flexibility and strength present. This is not always the case.

With the lifestyle we lead in the present day the overall level of fitness has decreased but the leisure time has increased. Put the two together and you get dysfunctional bodies taking part in more physically demanding activities leaving the door open for an injury to occur. The major problem with re-born athletes is that they think starting a sport will enhance them physically. The old adage says “Get fit to do the sport not do the sport to get fit”.

With the advent of easier lifestyles the growing spectre of obesity is creeping up on some of us. An obese person can be susceptible to back problems; according to the American Obesity Association lower back pain is in the top ten for ailments linked to obese people. To check to see if you fall into this category complete this simple equation. Measure your height in metres and take your weight in kilograms. Now divide your weight by your height squared. See the example below:

80kg ÷ 1.75m2 (3.0625) = 26.1. This is known as Body Mass Index or BMI.

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is normal. 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and over 30 is considered obese. An obese person will put more strain on the body, which can lead to injury and or bad golf. As previously mentioned the lower back comes in for a lot of punishment when playing golf in the obese population. When swinging a golf club the force that goes through the spine can be up to eight times that of your body weight. People who are obese or de-conditioned will not be able to follow a swing pattern that is conducive to keeping the body safe from over stressing itself. This will in turn lead to other areas of the body being put under pressure to cater for the original weakness. The vicious circle continues until the body cannot adjust anymore leading to injury and lots of pain.

So what can be done to stop this from, one, occurring and, two, reversing it once it has happened? For the answers to this contact Terry at www.fit-foregolf.com or call 01-0096588.
