The Hash House Harriers is an international social group that is formed into a loose federation that exists in more than 180 countries of the world. The focus of the Hash is purely social and recreational - it is non-profit-making, non-political and open to all who wish to join. The activities consist of a non-competitive cross-country run (actually a paper-chase), followed by an evening of social eating and drinking. The Hash's origins lie in the old English sport of cross-country running known as Hare and Hounds, in which the “Hounds” follow a trail across country set by the “Hare”. In the 1930's this sport was introduced to Malaya by a group of expatriates. It became firmly established in Kuala Lumpur in 1938 and ran from the Royal Selangor Club Chambers - known by its nickname of “the Hash House” (Hash being slang for food). The group became known as the “Hash House Harriers” or “Hash” for short. The Hash was interrupted by the Second World War and was re-created in 1946 by some of its previous members. Since then the Kuala Lumpur Hash has run every week, including through the “Malayan Emergency” and it now has completed nearly 2,900 runs. Other Hashes have been formed at an increasing rate in recent years until there are now more than 1,600 active clubs with nearly 250,000 members worldwide. International Hash meetings, known as InterHash have been held every two years since 1978. The most recent InterHash event held this year, brought about 4,750 Hashers from all over the world to Cardiff, the capital of Wales, U.K. The next InterHash will be in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 27th -29th October 2006. The Hua Hin Hash House Harriers (H2H3) was founded just over five years ago. Initially running once a month, it now runs every other Saturday. The 56th run of the H2H3 was an ‘outstation hash' attended by a detachment of dedicated hashers who deployed to Vientiane, Laos for the 8th Indochina Mekong interhash. Just less than 500 hashers from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines converged on the Laotian capital for hash runs and post run lubes on the 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st of October. There was a ‘red dress run' in which all the boys and girls ran in red dresses on Friday and then on Saturday the main event runs of either 18k, 12k, 8k or 5k. Most of the H2H3 runners opted for the 8k run or 5k run/walk reasoning that they would be partaking of cold beer long before the long distance hashers. In any event, there was an ample supply of beer and non-alcoholic cold drinks for all. In the evening after the days running and hash fun and nonsense had concluded the hashers met at a large restaurant on the banks of the Mekong for some good food, more beer, and camaraderie. On Sunday, a ‘wat to wat' run was held downtown Vientiane during which the runners and the walkers followed the paper in a circuitous route which passed many of the numerous wats in the city, concluding at a riverside restaurant where the requisite shenanigans were held, more cold beer went down the hatch, and a good brunch buffet of Lao food was provided. Most of the H2H3 hashers had run out of steam by Sunday afternoon and did not join up for the Monday run, hightailing instead for the highlands of Luang Prabang for much needed R&R followed by a trip to Vang Vieng on the way back to Nong Khai for the night train to Bangkok. The 57th run, 12 November: 69 Forever, Ballbanger, Nut, Bee, Bo, Long Ron, Old Macdonald, Black Cat, Virgin Peter, Int Hebum, Hollow Legs, Dry Pool Diver, Comes First, Iron Lady, Blond Mary, Onefer, Terry, Hugo, Deep Throat, Mash Hash, Mud Man, Mud Girl, Rolo enjoyed a fairly testing run/walk which was located between the hills of Cha-am around the Moo 2 area. There were an unusual lack of short cutters and at the end of the run we were stretching to call legitimate downdowns. However there were some newcomers, who we welcomed in the usual manner, and Old Macdonald received a justified downdown for the outrageous offence of running whilst leading the walk, this sort of behaviour will have to be stamped on firmly. There were around 25 hashers even though around fifteen or so regulars were missing thru being out of the country or having important other commitments. As anticipated, the “Champion” Cup was played out between the highly credentialed Samurai side from the UK and 2003 Cup runners-up, Marist North Harbour from New Zealand who proved to be worthy champions in winning 33-12. Samurai had previously eliminated strong combinations in Briars from Sydney (47-0) and top Japanese corporate side, Tamariva (38-7) while Marist had an even tougher run to the final in overcoming Malaysian champions Cobra ((31-7) and fellow Kiwis Linton Army (29-0) before making it to the Cup final. In a very high standard match the final was played at tremendous pace, which kept the large crowd on their toes throughout. Marist displayed a top brand of sevens rugby in the first half which left Samurai in their wake, scoring three tries to one and turned at half-time with the score at 19-7. Marist kept the pressure on throughout the game and allowed Samurai very few opportunities to open up the match. For Marist, tries were scored by Andrew Tihore (2) and one each to Zar Lawrence, Junior Tomasi and Sam Muir. For Samurai, Ed Buel and Cobra replacement player Kini Rasolosolo each scored tries. The Plate event was played out between traditional rivals Thai Police and Thai Navy who played a very entertaining and close match before Police scored on the final bell to win the match 33-31. The Bowl was won by the British Club who beat St Johns Lakemba from Sydney 56-12, while the Women's Sevens was won by the powerful US invitational side, Atlantis who beat the Thai Air Force 66-0 in a one-sided match. In a very high standard and hard fought Boys U15s “Rugby Challenge” final playing 15-a-side rugby, Vajiravudh College beat the predominantly expat side Bangkok Lions, 19-10. 2005 BANGKOK SEVENS TOURNAMENT RESULTS Woods Bagot Thailand, Women's Rugby Sevens Semi Finals Atlantis bt Lloyd McDermott 34-0 Thai Air Force bt Bangkok PE 5-0 “Champion” Men's Rugby Sevens Bowl Quarter Finals Lloyd McDermott bt Vientiane Tigers 43-0 British Club bt Eastern Asia Uni 22-10 St Johns Lakemba bt South Darwin 38-7 Hanoi Dragons bt Les Piliers 19-0 Plate Quarter Finals Thai Air Force bt Santa Monica Fins 31-0 Thai Police bt Southerners 33-14 TRU U23 bt Bkk Japanese 31-0 Thai Navy bt Kasetsart Uni 26-7 Cup Quarter Finals The Samurai bt Briars 47-0 Tamariva bt Cairns Brothers 19-5 Linton Army bt Suas, Chiang Mai 24-0 Marist Nth Harbour bt Cobra 31-7 Bowl Semi Finals British Club bt Lloyd McDermott 19-17 St Johns Lakemba bt Hanoi Dragons 17-7 Plate Semi Finals Thai Police bt Thai Air Force 19-12 Thai Navy bt TRU U23 19-7

The most notable qualifiers are Australia and Trinidad and Tobago, who beat Uruguay and Bahrain respectively, the former in a nail biting penalty shootout. Trinidad and Tobago owe much to their goalkeeper Kelvin Jack who made a spectacular last minute save, tipping a goalbound shot over the bar. With a population of just over one million Trinidad will be the least populated country taking part in the 2006 finals in Germany and are only the fourth Caribbean side to reach the finals following Cuba in 1938, Haiti in 1974 and Jamaica in 1998. The two heroes for Australia were their goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who saved two of the Uruguayans penalties, and John Aloisi, who scored the decisive spot kick. This will be both teams first ever appearance in the finals and no doubt both will attract significant ‘second team' support from many people. The other playoff winners were Switzerland who edged past Turkey on the away goals rule, amid a very hostile atmosphere and reports of players fighting after the game in the tunnel, as well as the Czech Republic, winners over Norway, and Spain who were very comfortable in beating Slovakia. From the January edition of the Observer, once the groups have been drawn this month, we will begin a countdown to the Finals with a rundown every month of the teams and players involved, along with our assessment of their chances. We will categorise these as follows; Rank Outsiders, Surprise Packages, Also Rans, Dark Horses and Favourites, and in our June edition we will try our hand at a firm prediction, along with a complete guide to the fixtures and potential stars of the tournament. The final list of 32 qualifiers is thus as follows: Germany, Argentina, Japan, Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Angola, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Holland, Poland, England, Croatia, Italy, Tunisia, Portugal, Ecuador, Paraguay, Costa Rica, France, Serbia and Montenegro, Sweden, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic. |
