Fit for Golf

The next time you watch the pros playing just look at their backs and see how straight they are. The more the back is in a neutral position the more it will move. a neutral back is the natural curve of the spine. In modern life we tend to do a lot of leaning forward and this will lead to a spine that is curved in a forward position stopping the back from twisting as it should. Once the spine doesn't move how it should you transfer the movement to other parts of the body, namely the shoulders and hips. this can lead to a swing that is out of line and of course bad shots. Sound familiar?

If you are having trouble with your game then look at your posture. stand side on to a mirror and look at how you stand. Then take your golf address and look at your posture. Don't straighten up the back because you are looking at it! Stand naturally and see how it looks. Straight or curved? If it is straight then you should have reasonable movement if not read on.What can you do to get the back in the position it is designed to be in. Firstly don't try to get yourself upright too quickly. You have taken years to get a bad posture so it will take a little while to re-educate the back and have it return to functioning properly. For an ongoing exercise that can be done anywhere just straighten the back as you walk or sit getting the muscles to lengthen and take out some of the curve. For this to work I want you to pick a colour and when you see anything of that colour think about straightening the back. Don't move too much just get out of the forward posture.

Eventually the muscles in the front of the body will lengthen and you will be more upright. For a more specific exercise to mobilise the spine roll a towel up so it is about 10cm wide. Place this on the floor and place your back on top of it somewhere around the shoulder blades. Bend your knees and make sure your hips don't move during the exercise. Support your head with your hands and then let the shoulders and head drop to the floor. This will get the vertebrae moving and free the stiffness in the spine. It is not a sit-up so only move from a straight body to the floor. After about ten repetitions move the towel to another part of the back. Keep the towel around the shoulder blades. These are a couple of simple exercises to unlock the spine and get the back moving, so your swing will be better equipped to get the club in the right position when it makes contact with the ball.

We had a really event filled day at Palm Hills. Everybody was having a hard time mastering Palm Hills undulating greens, with some very hard pin placements. However some of our players found a way. Udom Poolsawat aced the 3 rd hole, congratulation to the “Hole in One”. Leslie Stewart holed out his second shot on the 9 th hole, great Eagle Leslie. Most of us where happy to get away with a 2-putt par on the 9 th , (felt like a birdie). Christopher Longbottom also managed an eagle, at the par 5 hole 7 th. Well Played guys .
