Fit for Golf

Time for another look at improving the flexibility of the back, and specifically the spine. These three exercises will help to increase the range of movement in rotation and flexion/ extension. The first two to be performed on all fours, commonly termed as the tabletop position.

For better rotation start with the hands under the shoulders and the knees under the hips. Try to keep the back in neutral. This was explained earlier but for those of you who missed that riveting article I will reiterate. To find the neutral spine in the tabletop position arch the back as far as is comfortable and then round the back as far as is comfortable. Keep the shoulder blades still. Find the halfway point between the two extremes and then the spine will be in neutral. Once the back is in position, start by bringing one arm around the front of the body dropping the same shoulder and rotating the back. Breathe out as the arm comes across and breathe in as you return to the starting position. Keep the legs and hips still. After passing one arm through, complete the same movement on the opposite side. Repeat 10 to 15 times on each side.

To extend the flexion/ extension of the back, get into the same position as the above exercise. This time arch the back to a range of movement that is comfortable and round the back to the same end of range. Breathe out as you round and breathe in as you arch the back. The shoulders and head have to stay still while the back is moving. Don't try to go too far as this could cause an injury. Repeat this 10 to 15 times.

Another mobilizing exercise for flexion/ extension is executed while lying on the back. Start and finish with the back in neutral, same technique used to define this as above. Lightly push the lower back into the floor and roll the spine up as though it was a bicycle chain being lifted off of a table. One vertebra at a time. Stop the movement once the body is straight. Then lower the back by also returning the vertebrae to the floor one at a time.

Breathe out as the body lifts and lowers. Take a breath in at the top and bottom.

For those of you with back issues the last exercise is not advisable.
