This month's golf news and features

Hua Hin Golf Society - Chiang Mai Trip

Alan Rawson with a three-day score of 91 pts Stableford won the individual honours.

The whole event was a big success, 53 persons (36 golfers and 17 supporters) made the journey, most be coach and air, and four by road.

Apart from the golf the social scene was enjoyed by everybody. Solomon and other bachelor status participants kept us amused with their tales of their evenings/early mornings out and about in Chiang Mai.

The Royal Chiang Mai course, where we played twice, was in superb condition. Chiang Mai Lamphun was adequate but a bit scruffy.

Fit for Golf

If you have just arrived from Mars you won't know there is a football competition this month in Germany. The rest of us will be aware that the World Cup starts on 9 th June. As the temperatures, in Germany, get close to what we experience in Thailand most of the year so the body has more to deal with. As with any endurance sport the body may sometimes work a bit too hard than it is used to and this results in bad performance or complete shut down. As most rounds of golf take four hours plus, the chances of fatigue and overuse of joints and muscles is increased considerably. What can we do to maintain the level of activity that sees a good round of golf at the end of the day?

In this climate taking on water is essential. Not only as you go round the course but before you start playing. Make sure that you drink a reasonable amount of water but not too much as the body will react detrimentally to this and stomach cramps may occur. Keep sipping water even if you don't feel thirsty. Once thirst comes on you will already be dehydrated.

Some of you may feel that the golf swing starts to deteriorate towards the end of the round. Muscles used sometimes tighten up and of course this leads to problems with maintaining the right position while moving the club. A few stretches and some mobilizing will help keep the body loose enough to get the most out of the last few holes.

To make the hip move more freely sit on a bench. Keep the right foot on the ground and place the left ankle on top of the right knee. Similar to crossing over the legs but don't take the bottom part of the leg over too far. Straighten the back and lean forward from the hips. There should be a stretch in the left hip. Keep coming forward a bit at a time but don't hold the stretch for more than a second. Breath out as you go forward and just ease back a little in-between forward movements. Change the legs over and repeat the sequence.

To mobilize the back, sit on a bench and this time turn the torso to the right. As with the last stretch keep easing to the right while breathing out. Don't try to go too far. Repeat on the other side.

This should get you through the round. If you would like to know more about these techniques or any other exercises to improve your golf call Terry on 01-0096588 or visit the fit-foregolf website at www.fit-foregolf.com

Butterfly Rock Golf Club

From May 2006 a new golf club will be operating in the Hua Hin area. The “Butterfly Rock Golf Club” will be using the new Butterfly Rock Gentleman's Club in Soi Sarawat as its headquarters thanks to Peter Dunne the proprietor.

Membership to the new club will initially be by invite, however anyone who wishes to be a member and has not been invited may request membership through the Secretary (details below) up until the end of June 2006, their application will be considered by the committee. Thereafter membership will be by application through a proposer and seconder who must both be members, the application form must be submitted to the Secretary along with a valid handicap certificate. The joining fee will be 1000 Baht and the annual subscription 500 Baht. The club will be non-profit making.

Guests will be able to play at meetings. A maximum of 2 guests may be invited by a member, having first contacted the Sec or Captain for confirmation. If they can produce a valid handicap certificate they will be able to play in the competition, if they do not have a certificate they may still play, but not in the competition. For those without transport, Peter has said that he will arrange breakfast and transport to the venues at a reasonable cost, either to include both or just transport, he will also provide facilities for storage of golf clubs.

Competitions will vary week to week and will include Medal, Stableford, Betterball, Bogey, Bisque Bogey and Scramble. There will also be knock out competition during the year. Competitions will be played on various courses in the area and sometimes out of the area. Handicaps for members will be controlled by computer using the CONGU system. Member of both BRGC and Hua Hin GS will need to select a home club for handicapping purposes. Competitions will be played on a Wednesday so as not to conflict with other golf and may also extend to Saturday later.

Peter has kindly allowed the Golf Club to have its own page on the Butterfly Rock website, and he will include the golf programme for the month in his monthly e-mail to all his members, he has also said that members of the Golf Club will automatically become members of his gentleman's club. The golf page on the net will give details of competitions and dates plus venues, competition results, handicaps, and there will be a facility for booking a four ball for competitions on the net, plus any other relevant useful information.
