Fit for Golf

One of the best pieces of equipment around at this time to improve inner muscle (core) strength and balance is the Fit or Swiss Ball. Some of you may not have access to one of these but if you do then try the following exercises and marvel at the improvement it gives you. The basic idea of the ball is that it moves about so the body has to work extra to stop from rolling off of it. Simple idea, but not as simple to execute. There are some advanced ball users who can stand on a ball and hit golf balls. We won't be looking at that in this article, you may be pleased to hear.

These exercises will improve your balance and can be increased in difficulty as you find them getting easier. The idea is to kneel on the ball with initially all fours and then just knees and finally go through a range of movement while kneeling on the ball. To get started you should place the hands on the ball about shoulder width apart. With the knees under the hips place them on the ball also, roll the ball forward until the feet lift off of the ground. Now the important thing is that you place both knees on the ball simultaneously. One at a time will most likely see you roll off one side of the ball. At first some of you will have trouble steadying the ball. It is a bit like the first time you rode a bike. The more you try the easier it becomes. But unlike cycling if you don't keep the work up then you will lose the improved balance and go back to finding it hard to stay on. To keep as near to the middle as you can, which is where you need to stay, just make adjustments with weight shifts. Feel yourself moving left then shift slightly to the right. Falling backwards, then lean forward. Once you have mastered this then try to get onto your knees only. This can be achieved initially by holding on to a solid structure and rolling the knees onto the ball. Keep one hand on the ball, steadying it as you roll onto it. Make sure you have enough room between the ball and the thing you are holding on to so as you don't squash your face up against it! When on the knees try removing some of your fingers from what you are holding on to. Eventually you will be able to kneel without holding on. Lastly you won't need to use anything to hold onto and should be able to roll onto the ball unassisted. Lift your body up so only the knees are on the ball. Now you can mimic your golf swing as you balance.

If you haven't got a ball but would like to try some of these exercises then contact Terry on 01-0096588 or drop an e-mail via the website www.fit-foregolf.com
