This month's sports news. Hua Hin Hash House HarriersRun # 75 on the 22nd of July was hared by Mud Man and Melon Masher. The run site was just south of the Pa La-U road off the Pranburi bypass and was a couple clicks beyond MM & MM's regular run route. Now that we're experiencing almost daily rain, we luckily got it an hour ahead of the scheduled run time of 5:pm. However, there was plenty of evidence that a lot of rain had fallen in the area in recent days, as the mud was deep and slimy. The hares were good enough to forewarn us to wear our nastiest shoes, as any shoes worn on this trail were sure to get nasty by the end of the day. Most of us came prepared for the mud with the exception of Melon Masher who arrived at the run in brand new runners. When asked about the new shoes he said that he had to throw the old ones away after laying the trail the previous day. I think he lucked out running with the H2H3 because unlike most hashes, we do not require hashers to drink beer from new shoes. Most of the hashers arrived at the run site well ahead of the 5:pm run time. Surprisingly enough, even 69 Forever and his truck full of girls made it to the site on time. 69 Forever had just returned from a trip to the UK and when he reset his watch to Thai time he must have set the watch an hour later than it actually was. 69 Forever told us that he would have arrived even earlier if he had not gone out of his way to make a stop at the Chicken Coop to pick up Jit who recently blew into town for a visit from her new digs in Christchurch NZ. Turned out that 69 Forever wasted his effort and gasoline as Jit had changed her mind about catching a ride with him preferring to ride with Pimpa. (Translation: Jit decided to stay at the Chicken Coop since Pimpa had no plans to come) Hollow Legs and Comes First arrived early, as did the Lone Ranger and Aon. Mud Man and Mud Girl were also early and brought with them the boss of the family and the baby boy. The boss was the only hasher among the two dozen who came who wore rubber boots. Brand new and shiny they were and brand new and shiny they stayed as both mom and son stayed in the car park when the hashers went off to Pamplona . Bulls***ter from the UK came along for his first Thai hash run wearing a hash T-shirt from Cyprus . Good runner and great Bulls***ter he was too. MysTerry Man from the Chiva Som made it to the run with Hugo who had not been with us in months. Good to have Hugo back on the trail, taking the lead and breaking the checks. Just before the runners and the walkers took off at 5, Melon Masher gave us all a quick spiel about the trail, telling us about the mud and the river at the end where we could all wash our shoes. He did not tell us everything about the mud though. Off we went at 5 heading into hills to the east of the car park following the trail along a dirt track of yellow mud spotted with numerous patches and lumps of black. Strange and nasty the muddy trail became as it led us to the hills of Pamplona . Lone Ranger, Bulls***ter, MysTerry Man and Hugo led the way for the runners, running swiftly across the slimy yellow clay while splattering and flattening the lumps of black. Just five minutes into the run we began to encounter the reasons for the dark lumps of mud as herds of dairy cows grazed on the weeds and the shredded paper used to mark the trail. Inspired by the annual ‘running of the bulls' in Pamplona , our hares had set the trail where many herds of cattle grazed and fertilized the land. As we ran through the muck around the cattle, the cattle began to stampede in all directions of the compass and the cattle herders began to run through all of the curse words in their vocabulary, as they too had to run to stop the stampede. Someday we are going to remember that cattle distrust hashers and invariably stampede when they see us running toward them. It seems that cattle know that they cannot trust humans since humans are either going to yank on their tits every day or else kill and eat them. Somehow all of the runners and walkers made it thru the thundering herds and back to the car park untrampled. About 100 meters from the end a swiftly flowing ditch of clear water was arranged by the hares for washing the mud and the BS from our shoes. Back in the car park, the cooler was opened and Ballbanger called the circle. Several hashers were down-downed with cold beer or water and new visitors and returnees were welcomed to the H2H3. When darkness fell, the circle was broken and many of the hashers went off to a restaurant off Pa La-U road near Hua Hin for more grog and some grub... Another great hash day... Run # 76: Best and worse run of H2H3 history on the 5th of August. The trail was just south of the Suan Soan entrance off the west side of the highway a couple clicks. First time ever in the area and utterly fantastic hashing territory. The army has a base in the immediate area and they have all kinds of great trails weaving throughout the hills. I am sure we will be here again many times as the runs go by... Unfortunately, the hares' (Rolo & Lone Ranger) trail was washed away in some places by heavy rains despite their efforts to fix it at the last moment. Lots of people lost the trail and somehow managed to make it back to the car park before the tigers came out for dinner. Only four of us actually stayed on the trail to the end (almost) even though we lost it several times. Doug, two newcomers and myself managed to stick together to the end (almost). We had Bill Evans with us but never saw him again after he stopped to tie a shoe. About two hours into the run, Noi from Chicken Coop came out in search of lost hashers in her pickemup truck. We were about 2 km from the end and worn out. It was getting dark and we had fears that the walkers were decimating the cooler or we'd not have taken the ride. As it was, we had lost Bill Evans. Back at the car park and the cooler we had some beer and discussed strategy for rescuing Bill Evans in the jungle growing dark and growling. I did not hold a Circle. We went off in various search groups and contacted the army in the area for help. Just as the army had gathered some sober soldiers for the search, a tiger dragged Bills broken bones into the car park. Tiger appeared still hungry and was looking longingly at Kob... Actually, Bill got found and was delivered to the car park by a couple of soldiers. No broken bones but no blood left because of the skeeters... We were certainly happy to have Bill back with unbroken bones. We worried about finding his dentures in tiger crap in coming weeks... Second time we've lost a hasher this year. Good idea for all hashers to carry cell phones with numbers of other hashers in their phone book... We did not have an On On after the run just as we didn't have a circle. We didn't have any cold beer left either. So, we split for Hua Hin and Cha Am. Kob & I went on to the Chicken Coop to meet 69 Forever, Noi and Sparky. Newcomers also came. Pimpa was at the bar with many excuses for missing the run. She had an excuse for each beer she had drank in the six hours she had occupied the stool... Next weeks Cha Am hash run will be in my area, as Lone Ranger and I will hare. Following week, the Bangkok hash visits and we'll share the trail hared by Stumbles and other Bangkok hashers.... Barry will play their home games at Johnny Walker Bar Thai Life will play their home games at Billy's Bar EUROPEAN TRANSFERSFollowing our extensive review of the English Premier League last month, presented here are the major transfers that have happened in the three other major European leagues, namely in Spain, Italy and Germany. Some last minute deals can obviously not be included but most activity at press time is here. Apologies to those supporters of less prominent or lower league teams , but it is impossible to include everything! ITALIAN SERIE A Following the national team's victory in the World Cup, the constantly brewing corruption scandal involving the club sides exploded with heavy penalties for AC Milan, Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio, subsequently reduced on appeal, but not before some major transfer dealings and fallout. Consequently Serie A is likely to be one of the most open competitions in years, with no one able to predict the outcome. WHAT IS WRC? Preparations for the hard-fought season begin months before the first rally. The governing body, the FIA, approves routes, stages and final locations of the16 rallies around the world, and passes on a copy of the proposals to the manufacturers. Each rally must allow three days for the reconnaissance (or recce), one day for technical checks (or scrutineering) and three days for competition. The rally is divided into three legs, and typically has between 15 and 25 special stages. The manufacturer-backed factory teams will enter two or three cars each, and arrive on location weeks before the start of a rally for on-site preparation. The competing World Rally Cars are seeded and start the event according to their ranking, with the leader of the drivers' championship setting off first. Often there are up to 90 cars taking part - the rest of the field made up of the Junior World Championship (smaller, lower-powered cars for younger drivers), or the Production Car World Rally Championship and private teams. THE RECCE: Driver and co-driver familiarise themselves with the stages before the start of the event. They drive the leg in a standard road-car (fitted with extra safety equipment) in the three days preceding the rally. It is here that the codriver jots down detailed pace notes for use on the stage itself. THE STAGES: The special stages are the competitive sections of the rally - where the drivers and co-driver drive as fast as possible to achieve the quickest time. They take place on private roads or public roads, which are closed to the general public while the rally is in progress. A typical rally will have about 25 special stages over three days. The stages are linked by public roads - called road sections - on which competitors must obey all local traffic laws. Each day contains about 400km of driving - a third of which are the competitive special stages. Stages vary in length from five to 60kms, with the cars' times being recorded after each stage to the tenth of a second. THE CLOCK: Forget about ‘first across the line'. WRC cars don't race directly against each other. They compete against the toughest opponent of all - time. Cars start at one or two minute intervals, racing against the clock, their times monitored and entered into the FIA computer. Unless they run into trouble, rivals rarely see each other during a stage. At the end of an event, the driver who's taken the least amount of time to complete all the stages is the winner. THE POINTS: Results achieved during each of the 16 rallies count towards the two FIA world championships - one for the drivers and one for the manufacturers. Drivers get 10 points for coming first, eight points for second place, six points for third, five points for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. A manufacturer can add up the points tally from two nominated cars. THE TIME CONTROLS: A rally itinerary is governed by a strict timetable. Drivers get time penalties for being late (or early!) to clock in to the start of the special stage and at the entry and exit of service parks. Late arrival at these controls is typically penalised with 10 seconds on every minute over and is added to the overall time of the driver. Drivers can be excluded from a rally if they are 15 minutes late for a time control, 30 minutes late for a leg or 60 minutes for an entire rally. THE SERVICE PARKS: After each group of stages is completed, the cars can visit a designated service park where repairs may be carried out by the teams under strict supervision during a 20-minute time period. At the end of each day the crews are allowed a longer 45-minute period to work on the cars before they are locked away in the guarded ‘parc fermé' until the following morning's restart. Crews are punished with time penalties for exceeding these allotted times. THAILAND OPEN 06This year, the US$550,000 ATP Thailand Tennis Open will be held from September 24 to October 1 at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok . With new sponsors BEC Tero putting in 150 million baht, the event promises to be more vibrant than in past years, with various additions including an international food festival, additional roaming performers around the stadium and special Thai boxing activities involving some of the tennis stars and Thai boxing champions. Giant TV monitors will be erected outside the arena showing the matches live for fans who cannot acquire tickets. Thai tennis fans are guaranteed the chance to see some of their favorite international players battle it out on court as the investment in appearance fees is more than ever before. Besides the excitement of the headlining tennis matches, fans can enjoy other interesting events at this year's Thailand Open, such as the international food festival and boxing activities. One of the event sponsors, Singha Beer, is currently negotiating to have some of the biggest names in Thai boxing participate in the event. Tennis star Andy Murray is a renowned Thai boxing fan and is expected to enjoy the opportunity to mix it up with some former boxing champions. For those who are unable to acquire tickets, closed circuit television monitors will be set up along the outer zones of Impact Arena to screen real-time action from the courts. A giant LED screen will broadcast the on-court excitement at the event main stage and when there is no on-court action, live bands will be performing on stage. The tournament will commence with the qualifying rounds (Sunday September 24 – Monday September 25) with all seats priced at 300 baht. The main draw rounds (Tuesday September 26 – Thursday September 28) will be divided into two daily sessions at 12am and 7pm. Tickets for these sessions start at 500 Baht. Tickets for the quarter finals, semi finals and finals are on sale at 1,000 and 1,500 Baht. Tickets are available now at all Thaiticketmaster outlets as well as at 50 participating Thailand Post offices in and around Bangkok . For more information please call 0 2262 3456 or visit The tournament this year returns to the Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani with the most wide open playing field ever. Already confirmed to compete this year are: World #4 Ivan Ljubicic, World #6 James Blake, two-time Grand Slam champions Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin, Argentina's Guillemo Coria, British sensation Andy Murray and Asia's #1 and hometown hero Paradorn Srichaphan. Further tennis stars will be announced in the coming weeks adding up to the strongest field ever to compete in the tournament. ”This is the most open field we have ever had,” said Brian L. Marcar, BEC Tero Entertainment Managing Director. “There are so many players who could win it this year and we will be announcing some more big names in the next few weeks.” Cypriot sensation Marcos Baghdatis, British legend Tim Henman and Spanish Grand Slam champion Juan Carlos Ferrero have all been added since that announcement. The three players add a mixture of youth and experience to the 2006 lineup and brings to 10 the number of big name players already confirmed for the event, making it easily the strongest field in the history of the tournament. Marcos Baghdatis thrust himself into the tennis spotlight at this year's Australian Open when he made the final beating Andy Roddick, Ljubicic and Nalbandian along the way. He started the year ranked #55 and last week cracked the top 10 for the first time. “I've heard good things about Bangkok and I'm excited about playing at the Thailand Open for the first time,” said Baghdatis. The charismatic player has attracted scores of fans around the world with his exuberant play and personality and is sure to be a hit with Thai fans. Britain 's Tim Henman was a late withdrawal from last year's event but is pleased to be able to make the trip this year. “This year I'm fit and feeling great and I am excited about playing in Bangkok for the first time,” Henman told organizers. His participation will be a rare chance for local fans to see one of the world's best serve/volley tennis players in action. Juan Carlos Ferrero is making his return to the tournament after a three-year break. Ferrero was a huge hit with Thai fans in 2003 and was runner-up in the inaugural event. “I had a great time at the first Thailand Open and have very good memories of Bangkok so it will be great to return this year,” he said. After three enormously successful years, Thai tennis fans are assured more magnificent tennis at the ATP Thailand Open 2006. With the depth of this year's field, spectators can expect to see big-name match ups from the very first session of play. Tickets for the event are available at all Thaiticketmaster outlets from Saturday July 15. Call 02 262 3456 for more details. FOOTBALL FUNDo you like playing football?
