GOLF NEWS

Hua Hin Golf Society

Charity: Our latest project at an orphanage in Pranburi has now been completed. Mercy House Khao Noi is a small privately run school for children between the ages of 5 and 14 who have no homes. Their latest addition is a 14 month old baby who was left outside their gate with it's papers. We invested 360,000 baht in building a new block of six classrooms, which will be used as a special skills learning area, such as sewing, computer and carpentry etc.

In the near future we will be treating all the children to an outing at a cinema and possibly Swensons in Hua Hin. There will be room on the bus for a limited number of members who would like to assist us in this day out for the kids.

Match Play league: Sam Sherriff and Berny won the above by one point from last year's winners Mick Evans and Neung Chueanil with a creditable record of Played 9 Won 7 Tied 2 and Lost none.

Annual Match Play: The first, second and third rounds have been completed. Results in next month's issue.

Fit for Golf

A question many golfers ask is 'which weight training exercises should I do to help my golf?' Ask yourself this; do you need big muscles to play golf? Only if you have to carry a heavy bag! With caddies to drag your clubs about when playing in Thailand there is no need for a huge frame, not for golf anyway. But that is not to say working muscles should be stopped entirely. Away from the golf course the body works better when the muscles are toned. A great way to develop muscle strength and also benefit the way you play golf is to bring in balancing exercises while training. Try the following.

To overload the muscles use dumbbells, 2kgs roughly, or a couple of bags of sugar that weigh the same. This exercise works the front of the arm and shoulder. While standing, start with the arm by the side and with the elbow slightly bent. Bend the elbow keeping the top part of the arm still by the side. Once the elbow is fully bent then proceed to push the hand over the head. Keep the hand slightly in front of the midline of the body. Stand side on to a mirror to check. Hand position is important when performing this movement. While the arm is by the side have the palm of the hand facing downwards. Turn the wrist outwards as you bend the elbow then inwards as the hands lifts above the head. Reverse the process to get back to the starting position. Always keep the body straight, don't lean over as you lift the arm. Try this about 10 to 15 times. That was the easy part. To make it more useful for golf stand on one leg for 15 repetitions and after a rest stand on the other leg for 15. If you really want to test your balance perform single arm while standing on one leg. Swap arms and legs to cover all the variables.

This exercise is only for those of you with good balance already. The position to test and to work in is a bit like a skier would adopt. Knees bent, leaning forward and back straight. To make sure it is safe hold onto a wall and test to see if you can stand without shaking. If you can't take the hands off of the wall without falling over then don't try it. If you can't hold this without discomfort then leave it. If the balance is good then continue. When all is well start with the arm pointing to the ground, dumbbell in hand if required. Focus on lifting the elbow up but don't bring the hand forward. The shoulder blades should move to the centre of the back. Don't shrug the shoulders. The only thing moving is the arm and shoulder blade. As above try it on one leg and change the hands and feet to cover all the angles.

Butterfly Rock Golf Club

Six months gone, and this new golf club goes from strength to strength. Back in April when we met and formed, it was thought by many that we would not succeed, but there is plenty of room in Hua Hin for 2 or even more golf organization, and that has been proved, we gave the golfers a choice and they have taken it.

In April at our organization meeting, we assessed that if we catered for residents and long term visitors only, we would possibly get about 60 members in the first year. So we made that figure our target for membership. We have almost achieved that in 6 months, and are very pleased with the progress, basically the membership is full, just a few places left, and from now on it will be a waiting list, and membership offered in sequence to the next applicant.

Talking to our members, I asked them why they came to us, generally the answer was that they liked the variety of formats we use, and it was a more intimate group. My thanks go to Steve Ross, and Paul Frampton, in their help in organizing the Golf Club,

We hope the Golf Club continues along its present path of providing established golfers with a vehicle for their enjoyment, and for those new golfers of whom we have quite a few, we are happy that we have been able to help you achieve your handicap and that we have educated you in some of the aspect of golf and its etiquette.

The first Matchplay competition commences in November, and it will be played for the J&B Putter, hopefully we will add to this competition next year with a club championship, and we have already had offers of 6 trophies to be played for annually, probably one every 2 months. These trophies have been presented by members, and we have given the donators the choice of format they should be played for, and the name of the competition. Our first trip away is on 24/25 and 26th October, and we will be going to Kanchanaburi, staying at Nichigo and playing there twice, with a game en-route at Royal Ratchburi. In the future it is hoped to have a home and away fixture with our friends from Pattaya, played on a Ryder Cup basis.

Black Mountain

Black mountain golf-nearing completion. The question that many have been asking in Hua Hin is " when is black mountain golf going to open?" The answer is - soon, but not until the golf course is ready.

The construction began 9 months ago and at present the fairway grassing is almost complete. The greens have been grassed for a few months already and have a beautiful surface of ???? bermuda grass. The fairways have been grassed with seashore paspalum. This is the first time this type of grass has been used in the Hua Hin area, and it gives a wonderful playing surface as well as a beautiful colour.

A computer controlled irrigation system, which is connected to a weather station, has been installed, to allow the fairways to be watered ???? and with just the right amount of water. This will produce fairways that are healthy and firm, rather that having dry and wet areas. No expense has been spared in the efforts to maintain the golf course to the very highest standards - even as far as having an underlay in the bunkers to hold the sand in place during heavy rainstorms.

The project leader is Gavan Wilson. He is in charge of building and maintaining the golf course. Gavan has worked in Thailand for 15 years and is one of the most highly respected golf course superintendants in Thailand.

The goal of black mountain golf is to ultimately be the best golf course in Asia. The intention is to hold many professional tournaments and try to attract some of the best golfers in the world. The golf course will be capable of providing a test for the top professionals but also be playable for the average golfers. The course architect, Phill Ryan, has made very clever use of the natural beauty of the site and the natural terrain. Features of the course are the rock faces set in to the mountains and the natural creeks that run trough the course. All the large rocks, found on site, have been used in the construction and as features on the golf course. Every consideration has been taken to make the course as visually stunning as possible. The location of the clubhouse was chosen to give a panoramic view over the whole course as well as positioning the 1st and 10th tees and 9th and 18th greens directly in front of the clubhouse.

When the golf course opens - everybody will be welcome to use the facilities which will include driving range and practise area, restaurants, pro shops and of course golf course.

As soon as more information becomes available we will keep you informed.
