Fit for Golf
Something that is omitted from golf training is correct breathing. Good breathing techniques whilst playing shots can help to limit
tension in the body and get you to swing more smoothly. If you have
ever stood in front of a 100 yard stretch of water and felt butterflies in your
stomach you now know what tension is. When the adrenaline starts to pump more than normal around the body the muscles go into a “flight or fight” mode.
This is our natural survival instinct. The idea is to get away from the situation not to try to choose the right club. What happens more often than not is the fluidity of the body seizes up and the speed of the swing increases with the outcome being a bad shot. Time to get another ball out of the bag. Sound
familiar? So what can be done to limit the chance of tearing into the shot and seeing one more ball disappear from sight.
When playing a shot try to link you’re the breathing to the momentum
of the swing. Breathing out on the backswing will help the muscles to relax and improve range of movement. But breathing out as you downswing and strike the ball will also keep the tightness out of the swing. A bit of experimentation will tell you what works best for you. Start by making small backswings and increase to your normal range of movement.
The way we breathe is also vital. If you are stressed or rushed then you will tend to breath from the top part of the chest. To bring more air into the body and to develop better control over your chest and rib muscles the breath should go further into the chest. This is called diaphragmatic breathing. To test to see where the air flows in, just stand in front of a mirror and watch the ribcage. Do the shoulders rise? If so follow the simple exercises to improve oxygen intake and help relax into your golf shots.
Lie on your back with knees bent to 90o. Place the back in neutral. To see if the ribcage moves correctly, place the hands on the side of the ribs at the lower part of the ribcage. Breathe in and push the hands out with the ribs. This may take a few attempts but eventually the diaphragm will start to function better and breathing will improve. Lying down is for comfort. When the technique is perfected on the floor then try it standing. After that, move on to breathing in this way while swinging your clubs.
To go one further, stand with feet apart, back straight (neutral) and
hands clasped behind the back. Inhale and pull navel to spine, don’t move spine. As you breathe out roll the shoulders back and drop the hands to the floor. Hold for two breaths and repeat three to five times.

Butterfly Rock Golf Club
The matchplay competition is under way, and in keeping with the recommendation of the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) It is being played off full difference in handicap. There has been a lot talked about this in UK, but the recommendation is that if a player has a handicap, why should he lose some of this by playing off 3⁄4 difference, thus giving the lower handicapper an even better chance. To justify this a survey was done of some 800 clubs to review the match play result; the answer was that instead of the lower handicapper winning 65% of the time, they now win 56% of the time, therefore there chances of winning instead of being very good are now good. We have made our players responsible for their matches, and they have to arrange them independently and they must be played by a stipulated date. So far no problems, and all matches have been played within the time limit allowed - let’s hope that that situation remains. The match play is being played for the J & B Putter, which can be seen in Butterfly Rock, mounted on the honours board. Also in Butterfly Rock is the member’s board listing the original 30 founder members and all other members. Withour increase in membership has come an increase in competition numbers, both at Wednesday Competition and at the 2 weekly roll ups, at Lake View and Palm Hills.
The membership is now closed and we are operating a waiting list for
anyone wishing to join. We are planning a number of activities for the future, and these will be announced when arrangements have been completed. One, which is well underway, is our Christmas Party; this will be held at Sailom Hotel on 24th December (Christmas Eve) - further details from the committee members. This week we reached our record numbers with 26 players at Lake View Roll Up, 21 players at Palm Hills Roll Up and 31 players at Wednesday’s competition at Lake View. This somewhat emphasizes our estimate that with 60 members we could get about 30 in the field each week, and is the reason membership is waiting list only. Enjoy your golf, and remember it is high season, things are not the same - be patient.
