Hua Hin Hash House Harriers
H2H3 run #85, 9 December 2006, Rama VI camp
The 85th run of the H2H3 was supposed to be hared by Peter and Gha Clarke from the Market Bar in Hua Hin but they had to cancel and so Ballbanger & Lone Ranger stepped up to the plate with a run at the Rama VI camp. Located at kilometre marker 216, the Rama VI Border Police Camp is also home to the Marukhathaiyawan Palace, former summer palace of Rama VI. It had been years since the palace was used by a king of Thailand and more than 5 years since the H2H3 had run in the camp. With us on run # 85 was Taipan and Brambles Bill who hared the first ever hash run here just after the turn of the century. Though this was a first ever for the H2H3, the Cha Am Hash had a couple of runs inside the camp including one in March when the International Kite Festival was held. This most recent run coincided with the ‘Winter Festival of Marukhathaiyawan Palace' but stayed well away from the actual royal residence in favour of staying on the bicycle paths and trails that wend their way through the north end of the camp.
Leaving the car park just a couple hundred metres from the entrance of the camp, the run began on tarmac bicycle paths in a counter clockwise direction, heading southward toward the palace until coming to a check that resulted in a shift in direction to the west toward the external wall of the camp along Petchkasem Road. At the wall there was another check and the runners had to look again for shredded paper marking the direction of the run and found it to be heading to the south before turning eastward toward the Gulf of Thailand. Onward the trail went, leading the runners and later the walkers thru a small residential area and then past a soccer field where the trail took a turn to the north passing tennis courts on the right. Once past the tennis courts the trail left all human habitation behind and went into the woods near the beach until it came to a check and time to try to find the trail again. Near the check was a wooden boardwalk and a swinging footbridge leading out across tidal flats and a mangrove swamp and it was along this trail that the shredded paper was found once again putting the runners on the trail to the beer at the end of the run. Once a couple hundred metres of elevated boardwalk were behind the hashers they found themselves once again on asphalt bike paths running parallel to the beach in a northern direction away from the palace until the trail turned westward for a while. Crossing a concrete vehicle bridge, the trail turned to the north for the runners and then to the south for the walkers since the southward route was a shortcut to the car park and the cooler. Staying well ahead of the pack of runners, Mud Man managed to come in first followed closely by Onefer, Quick Mickey Mou, and Taipan. Staying well ahead of the back of the pack, 69 Forever broke land speed records coming in to the finish in the top 90% of the pack without getting lost for even a minute. Among the walkers to make it back to the car park late was almost all of them. After the runners had been back for almost half an hour, Dragon Tail took the Toyota to go out on a search and rescue mission. No sooner had she left the car park than Manfred led a group of eight lady walkers from the woods to the east of the car park. He grinned that he has been lost and unable to find the trail and all of the ladies backed up his alibi. We will always wonder.
In the end, the H2H3 enjoyed another great Saturday afternoon of hashing. Ballbanger held the requisite circle and the nonsense that went along with it but did manage to make some use of the time without wasting it all meaninglessly. Hollow Legs had suggested that since many of the Hashers would be going to the Chicken Coop for Christmas Dinner on Sunday the 24th of December, that it might be a good idea for the H2H3 to run on the 24th instead of the 23rd as scheduled. It seemed like a good idea and virtually all of the hashers present agreed with it and so the next run of the H2H3 will be on Sunday, 24 December at 1630 hours.
Hua Cha Hash Pedalers
On November 27th, the Hua Cha Hash Pedalers had the seventh run of the year in the Cha Am Area.
Forming up at Crawfords Irish Pub in Cha Am, seventeen cyclists hit the road about 15 minutes past 9 in the morning on a sunny Monday and headed westward across Petchkasem, past the market place and along the back road toward to Pranburi Bypass. Across the bypass, the trail led along the canal at Nong Yao and then turned left toward Hup Ka Pong, crossing Hup Ka Pong road at about 10:am. It was at this time that the bike riders had pedalled about 10km and also at this point that they were all warned that they were at the point of no return. From here, the trail would follow a dirt track parallel to the hills on the left and pineapples fields, eucalyptus forest and wild brush to the right. No known shortcuts for a return to Cha Am were known from this point. Regardless, all of the cyclists with one exception decided to stay on the trail and see it thru to the end. John Gardner had returned to Cha Am as he had determined before the ride began that he wished to do 20 kilometres in total and so he headed back by himself. This was no problem for John as he was familiar with the area, cycling often in recent years.
On along the dirt track to the north the cyclists pedalled, as the sun got higher in the sky and warmer on the skin. After more than 7 kilometres of pedalling on the dirt, the trail came to a T-junction and turned right with a return to tarmac. Once on the hard road, a small store was found where water supplies were replenished and an air pump got busy re-inflating Oggies bike tyre as he had experienced a slow leak somewhere along the way. After the riders had all cooled off in the shade and had their fill of water, they were on the road again in an eastward direction until they came to Petchkasem Road where the trail turned south. Pedalling southward toward Cha Am, the trail soon took a turn to the east at Ban Nong Ta Phot and headed for the hills at Khao Nang Phanturat Forest Park. At the park, the trail turned southward along an irrigation khlong until it came to a small bridge leading into a derelict housing project gone to the dogs and then across dry tidal flats past shrimp farms, coming out at Ban Khlong Thian.
From this point, most of the riders once again knew where they were and which way to pedal to get back to the Irish Pub where the cars were parked and the cold beer waited on the ice. It was just after high noon when the last of the riders made it back, finishing the seventh run of the Hua Cha Hash Pedalers. It turned out to be a 41-kilometre trip, which was felt to be long enough for most of the riders and a bit longer than necessary for some others. None complained that it was too short.
The 8th run of the Hua Cha Hash Pedalers will go at 0900 on Monday the 18th of December from the parking lot at the temple just 1.5 kilometres after crossing the Khlong at the intersection a block west of soi 56 in Hua Hin. Call Don at 0850887181 for info.
The 9th and the 10th run of the Hua Cha Hash Pedalers will be with the Bangkok Bike Hash.
The Bangkok Bike Hash plans a Pranburi ride in January and then in February a ride in the Kaeng Krachan area.
