Hua Hin Golf Society
THE CHAIRMAN RESIGNS: Peter Gouldby, who has been holding this position for seven years, has decided to call it a day, and will hand over the reins of the Society to the new committee on 26th January at the AGM. The newly elected committee will then select a new chairman from the six candidates who have been voted in. Also a staunch member, Fritz Shroeder, has informed us of his desire to give somebody else a chance.
Therefore four members who have another year of their tenure to go i.e. Berny, Kevin, Milke and Mick Evans, will be joined by at least two new members and also Robert Baker if he has been re-elected, will form the new committee.
We must pay tribute to Peter and Fritz for their valuable contributions in bringing the Society to it's present healthy state. We are sure they will both continue their memberships and play in our Society events on a regular basis.
CHARITY 2006: A huge 416,000 baht was raised from private donations at the four-ball scramble and the dinner at the Dusit. Thank you everybody for your support.
We are still open to ideas for a new charity project; please let the committee know of any worthy cause in the Hua Hin area.

Fit for Golf
The more movement in the body the better it will function. This goes for simple things like picking the toothbrush up in the morning to lifting your cases off of the carousel at the airport. The further the body moves the more flexible the muscles and the less chance of injury. Following the movements here will help to get a better overall range of movement through the torso, making it easier to turn whilst swinging a golf club and complete everyday activities without risk of injury.
These can be performed standing or sitting. If your balance is not too good then take a seat. As with all mobilizing exercises, the speed of the movement is important. It should take one second to go to the end of range of movement and without stopping at the end, take one second to come back.
The first action is to lean forward as far as is comfortable. We are looking to work the torso so keep the pelvis still. To secure the pelvis, imagine you are pulling your belly button to your spine. Breath out as you go forward and in as you return to the original position. Repeat this 10 to 15 times, you should see an increase in the amount you can go forward. It may not be great deal so don't try to force the movement.
From there change the angle you bend to. Drop to one side and then over to the other side. As you swap sides stop in the centre for a split second. The next range of movement is to lean diagonally forward and return to upright. The breathing and control of the pelvis are the same as the last exercise. As the body goes forward the head should stay in the same position. Make sure you don't drop or lift the chin.
To complete the actions of the torso make a circle with the upper body. Still keep the pelvis fixed. Breath out as you go forward and in as you go backwards. Again don't try to go too far and if you are standing perform 4-6 times then rest to restore your balance before reversing the process.

Butterfly Rock Golf Club
End of Year Report
Sorry there was no report last month, but unfortunately my wife and myself were involved in a car crash on the 13th Dec in which Aree received 2 broken legs, I was lucky, being saved by the seat belt, but received bad chest damage, we both spent some time in hospital. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members and friends for their visits to the hospital and our home and your messages of get well soon
In March 2006 Steve Ross and Paul Frampton, to join them in forming a new golf organization in Hua Hin, approached me. At first I was reluctant, but having listened to them, and considered my own thought on golf in Hua Hin, I decided to join them, and they invited me to be Captain. Throughout March and April, many meetings were held, during which time we discussed every aspect possible in forming a new golf organization. The result of those discussions was “Butterfly Rock Golf Club”.
Many names were discussed, but as Peter Dunne had offered us the use of his new premises as a base, and the use of his website for communications purposes the name was agreed. The committee was set up with myself as Captain, Steve as Vice Captain, and Paul as Secretary/Treasurer. From there all of our documentation was agreed and produced, a constitution was agreed, membership qualification, local rules, and all those other bits and pieces too many to name were completed, and on 3rd May we played our first competition, a stable ford at Palm Hills which was won by Robin Heath with 34 points, and so Butterfly Rock Golf Club was in business, so to say.
Additional to the fixture list which we produced, we also organized roll ups at 2 venues, Monday at Lake View, and Palm Hills on Friday, which was a roll up already in being and run by Robin Heath; both of these roll ups have become an integral part of the golf club. Unfortunately Palm Hills is a problem in the high season, as they will only allow 3 tee times thus 12 players. Both have become very popular with some 20+ players playing at both venues weekly in low season, and 20+ at Lake View year round.
Membership took off quickly, the first 30 memberships were by invite, and they all became founder members of the Golf Club. These 30 invites were taken up, and it was not long before we had a full membership of 60 players, and a waiting list. A members' board was made and this now displays all the members' names in gold leaf and is situated in Butterfly Rock.
Additional to our weekly fixtures we were able to arrange a few special events which included a trip to Kanchanaburi, where we stayed a Nichigo and played all 3 of their 9 holes, much enjoyed by all, a Knock Out competition, including a plate competition for first round losers, and a Christmas Party held at Sailom Hotel, and enjoyed by everyone. The winner of the Knock Out was Sven Wermelin, runner up Tony Hallom, and the plate winner was Jim Lynch runner up Peter Dunne.
2007 will see an increase in our programme, 6 members have offered donations of trophies to be played in conjunction with our Wednesday competitions, and this has been taken up; the donators will choose the format for play and we will play them bi monthly.
Our Clubhouse Butterfly Rock should be undergoing some changes soon; I believe Peter wants to change it to a sports bar that will include golf. So hopefully we will be able to fix trophy board for our competition such as the J&B Putter Annual Matchplay board, which is already in the Clubhouse, I ask you to use Butterfly Rock when you can. It is our Clubhouse so any suggestions how we can use it socially please let me know.
It looks as if 2007 could be another busy year. For your information here are the 2006 stats. We played 33 competitions as follows: - Lake View (7) Palm Hills (7) Majestic (6) Royal Ratchburi (4) Kraen Krachan (4) Springfield (3) and Sawang (2)
We had 13 different winners in our individual events, they were:
3 wins – Mike Lord and Brian Reeve. 2 wins – Bob Welsh, Phil Simons, Derek Lindsay, John Callaghan and Howard Lewis.
1 win – Robin Heath, Steve Ross, Sven Wermilon, Peter Dunne, Mike Ford, Peter Angus. Our fun events included 4 scrambles, 3 better balls, and 4 multi tee games, so altogether a good mix of events. In total we held 33 competitions, and 38 roll ups at each Lake View and Palm Hills, a total of 109 events.
If you have any comments for the committee, or for meetings please write them down, or e mail them to myself, or Paul so that we can discuss them, and don't forget we have a suggestion book for your use. Please remember also that Howard Lewis has kindly given us use of a notice board in Limelight, where you can find the competition results, and Handicap list, plus other information.
May I on behalf of my committee wish you all a Happy Golfing 2007
Mike Ford
