Fit for Golf
The major part of a golf swing comes from the upper body. But the legs are just as important as the trunk. Strengthening the leg muscles can help by improving the power of the swing, hitting further, and controlling the swing, hitting straighter. The following two exercises should be performed only if there is no history of back and leg problems.
Dead lifts are one of those exercises that bring in most of the muscles. The range of movement mimics picking a box up from the floor. Firstly try the exercise with no weight. Stand upright. Back in neutral with knees slightly bent. To keep the back strong, pull the navel towards the spine, making sure the spine doesn't move. This will engage the internal abdominal muscles. Make sure the muscles aren't tightened too much. You should still be able to breath! Maintain the neutral spine as the torso bends forward. The hips will go backwards and the knees will bend. The range of movement is governed by your ability to hold the spine still. Usually 90o at the knees and hips is enough of a bend. When the body has moved forward far enough then return to the starting position. Control the movement both ways. It should take 2-3 seconds to go down and the same to return. Take a breath in at the top, breath out as you lower. Take another breath in at the bottom and breathe out as you lift. Repeat this about 10 times. As the exercise gets easier add some weight by holding 2-5kgs in each hand by the side of the body.
Stepping up onto a surface slightly raised from the floor will make the muscles in the legs strengthen and improve balance. If there is access to a small bench, about 30cm high that can be moved in front of a mirror then this is ideal. If not then any step around the house will suffice. The height should not be too high. Make sure the body is aligned, in neutral. Place right foot on the step and use the leg to lift up until the body is aligned again. Don't let the body lean forward as that takes the weight off of the leg. Step back with right leg on step controlling decent of left leg. Change legs and perform with the left side. Always keep the knee over the 2nd toe. This is where the mirror can be used. If there is no mirror then look down at the toes after every 3-4 repetitions to check the alignment. Repeat 10 times on each leg.
