Fit for Golf
From reading the latest golf publications the emphasis of this year's teaching is going to be biomechanics. Top professionals like Nick Faldo are advocating training the body to make it easier to follow the teaching pros instructions. Have you ever read an article by a golf guru and tried to follow their advice only to find that it is impossible to move in the way they suggest? It doesn't have to be. With a few simple mobilizing and flexibility exercises the body can turn under control to positions that you now dream of.
Another question you may ask yourself is why the pros hold their bodies at just the right spot to hit the ball correctly on almost every shot. Granted, talent has a lot to do with it but they also have the core strength to be able to stabilize themselves in the correct position at the precise moment needed. Fit-for golf can't do much for your natural talent but the bodies' core strength is something that can be easily improved. A range of stabilizing and inner abdominal exercises will not only help to make your golf swing something to be envied but also keep you injury free.
Injuries are common in most sports so their prevention is paramount. Having muscles that are strong enough to withstand the rigors of a round of golf will make it easier to recover from one round and be fresh for the next. Big weights are not needed, only specific, quality exercises that tone the areas most susceptible to damage while playing golf.
So the question you should be asking is “how can I improve my body to help my golf?” The answer is simple; ring the number at the bottom of this article and find out how fit-for golf can get you playing better golf and feeling better in yourself.

Black Mountain tee off
The latest addition to the list of high quality golf courses in the area, Black Mountain, is opening on 20th April and will be having a half price green fee promotion of 2000 baht running up to 15th October. There will be a Grand Opening of the course later in the year. Their tee times will run from 8 am until 1 pm every day with 15-minute intervals. The top class restaurant will also be open from the 20th April and will be run by our Swedish chef, Anders. The pro shop will be stocked with logo items and a selection of golf clubs, all at prices similar to Bangkok golf stores.
The course is located about 10 km from the town centre, and the address is 164 Moo 4, Taptai, Hua Hin , 77110 . They are welcoming people to come and have a look at the facilities and use the restaurant, even if they don't want to use the golf course.

Golf Handicapping and Clause 19. On many occasions I have heard the words “rule 19” on or around the golf courses. What they really mean is “Clause 19”, and this is a clause in the Standard Scratch and Handicapping Scheme, which is administered by CONGU (The Council National of Golf Unions). In 2004 CONGU issued a new and updated version of the system and this has been effective since 1st February 2004.
The system has been developed to achieve a uniformity and equity in handicapping throughout Great Britain and Ireland and other countries adopting the system. The nature of the game of golf, with its varying playing conditions, makes handicapping a relatively inexact operation. Nevertheless, if the same principles are sensibly and universally applied by handicap committees, a high degree of uniformity in handicapping can be achieved. It is therefore of paramount importance that all parties to the system fulfil their obligations to it.
Why do we have clause 19 (General Play)? That question is easy to answer; in golf there are many standards of play, and many individuals who play the game. We have club members with handicaps who regularly play in qualifying competitions, and therefore maintain their handicap in the proper manner, but we also have many who never play in competition, except for their own individual games with their chums, and consequently their handicap is never adjusted. The problem with this is when they enter the Annual Matchplay or one off competition they are playing from an unfair platform, there is no uniformity or equity. This also applies to visitors who request to play and cannot supply a handicap certificate, easy answer carry a certificate with you. Why do you think Butterfly Rock G.C. require such a certificate from guest, including personal guest, before they allow visitors to play as part of the competition?
How is the clause implemented? First and foremost it is known as general play. There are some who believe this to be the way they generally played on that day. NO, it is how they have generally played over a period of time, and if you look at Decision in the system book, Decision 15 say, quote “The circumstance of a low score in a single event is not sufficient evidence alone to justify a clause 19 reduction” unquote.
The onus lies with the handicapping committee, that whenever a player is seen to be playing regularly to or above their handicap, then it is their obligation to adjust the handicap to one they consider appropriate, and the reduction shall not be less than “1 stroke”, By the way the player must be informed of this change. This also applies to those who are playing badly; they can be given shots back under the same principle.
How do we assess a player? The handicap of a player is generally the standard to which he is able to play, and he may play to that standard some 4 to 6 times a year: it is not what he expects to play to every time he plays. If he plays to his handicap every time he is a candidate for a Clause 19 reduction. In general you would be looking for the players who constantly return 34/35 points or more in stable ford, or who regularly get to the semi/final in knockouts. In the case of players who do not enter competitions, you will have to get the information from the people they play with in their little 4 balls or swindles or other sources. Quite simply Clause 19 is there to regulate Uniformity and Equity.
