Hua Hin Online Community
The forums continue to grow this month with plenty of new topics and a few regurgitated old ones. Firstly though we would like to make a pledge for assistance for the Hua Hin Dog Rescue Centre, which is in deep water again, plagued with a recent staff and financial crisis. They desperately need volunteers for the shop so if you can spare a couple of hours to help this worthy cause it will be well appreciated. Any donations big or small are also gratefully received to assist the treatment of the many dogs in their care that would otherwise be roaming the streets of Hua Hin.
Rumour of a McDonalds outlet finally reaching Hua Hin has sent a wave of despair through several residents but love it or hate it the move just goes to show how much the town is moving forwards (or backwards) in terms of development. From a sleepy fishing village it is rapidly becoming an international resort so needs to cater for every requirement, including Big Macs.
An interesting question was posed by one reader regarding the general feeling and outlook of ex-pats in Thailand today. Following the series of government clampdowns on visas, and foreign companies over the past couple of years the majority do not have the optimism they once did in years gone by. Despite the odd persistent reader disputing the meaning of the word itself and claiming recent government action as simple “inflation” the majority were unanimous in their opinion that it is getting more expensive and more difficult to live permanently in Thailand today. A few agreed with the clampdowns as a way to rid the country of undesirables however felt it extremely unfair that all foreigners are constantly tarred with the same brush.
The plight of a favourite local beach at Khao Tao comes under the spotlight as it becomes developed by yet another housing estate. The secluded bay of Haad Sai Noi 15km south of town is a great little spot for a swim and to sample some local food ... enjoy it while you can.
There were a number of questions and recommendations for specific property developments however as we are impartial we cannot provide an answer. Other readers may offer information so the only piece of advice we can provide is make sure you check the place out yourself and get a legal advisor when dealing with any real estate issues in Hua Hin.
The demand for activities for children is on the increase, especially for those with kids between 4 and 6, there is very little for them to do here. Maybe something will be formed as a result of this demand. Additionally a couple of questions have been posed about international schooling in Hua Hin which is sadly a little behind other tourist destinations in the Kingdom – however things are improving and Somtawin school will be developing their English program this year.
HHAD held its 4th birthday party on the 10th of last month at Johnny Walkers, a good time was “hhad” by all. Cartoon and the band (pictured) entertained us all with some rocking renditions of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Guns n' Roses and Hendrix classics. We will be holding more social events throughout 2007 so check the forum for details; they provide a great way to meet up with other Hua Hin ex-pats and visitors.
HHAD forums are the definitive online message boards and discussions for the area with over 2,300 members. There are sections for finding and booking accommodation, seeking out bargains, and exploring the local area and beyond. There is also a nightlife section for the night owls, a restaurant and feeding guide along with an online meeting point for visa runners and clubs. The ever popular “Ask the expats” section is great for quickly getting the answers you need from the people that live here.

Always blossoming on springtime
Wing Tsun is a martial art developed in China about 250 years ago, and is now practised worldwide, in all walks of life, from the man, woman or child in the street to the very elite special forces and national security agencies.
Klaus Lippert is a qualified instructor in this art, and lives and teaches it in Khao Takiab, just south of Hua Hin.
The Observer paid him a visit to learn more about the history, technique and training of Wing Tsun.
Can you start by giving us an explanation of what Wing Tsun is?
Wing Tsun is more than a Martial Art; Wing Tsun is based on Kung Fu, which in return again is a living Philosophy containing Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Most strategies that are necessary in combat can be used in daily life. For example; giving in when the pressure gets too much, but not more than necessary...Return the pressure when it is released on the other side. Stick to one target and follow up. If the road ahead is blocked, do not give up - find a way around.
What does Wing Tsun mean?
Wing Tsun is a Chinese female name and means: Always Blossoming Springtime.
Could you tell us more about the historical development of Wing Tsun?
This question is very difficult as I could write a book about this. It starts far back in Chinese history; about 250 years ago, soldiers of the ruling Manchu government burned down the Shaolin Cloister. Most of the monks and apprentices who were practising martial arts died, but some were able to flee. The escapees consisted of the five elder monks, the leaders of the Shaolin style, and the Buddhist nun and Kung Fu champion Ng Mui also escaped, she was also the eldest. They split up in different directions in order not to get caught.
Ng Mui worried about attacks of the traitors who were also trained in Kung Fu Martial Arts and of course the Manchu soldiers. She was scared about the time that may come when she would be too old to defend herself against the younger, more powerful traitors. She had to find a system that would be superior to the existing Kung Fu techniques.
When Ng Mui saw a battle between a fox and a crane, she was inspired, and her newly developed system consisted of simple counter movements to the unpractical and complicated Shaolin Kung Fu. The Ng Mui system focused on eliminating the stronger aggressor methodically instead of applying power. One day, in the market between the borders of Sichuan and Yunnan province, Ng Mui heard about the difficulties of a pretty young girl Yim Wing Tsun, who was constantly being molested by men. She decided to help the girl but not by conquering the opponent with powerful strokes. On one side she did not want to give up her identity and on the other hand, a fight between a Kung Fu master and a bad village villain would not gain her any fame. That is why she wanted to help Wing Tsun to solve her problems by teaching her the new martial arts. To do so, Ng Mui taught Wing Tsun over a period of three years in a temple. When Wing Tsun returned to her village she was molested again by a villain named Wong.
This time she did not run away but challenged him to fight her. He was delighted as he saw a clear victory. He was very disappointed when Wing Tsun hit him to the ground where he laid helplessly, and never bothered her again.
After Wing Tsun continued her Martial arts, Ng Mui moved on telling her to find someone who could inherit her arts. Her husband, who had been a pupil of her, recognised that his wife was a great master of martial arts. To honour her, he named this martial art Wing Tsun Kuen.
This art was passed on over generations to those who seemed mentally fit to inherit it. A 13-year-old boy named Yip Man was the last student of Cha Wa Shun. Yip Man made Wing Tsun Kung Fu famous and he became the most famous master of them all.
Bruce Lee was a student of Yip Man and made Wing Tsun famous in the United States . A Closed Door Student (private) of Yip Man, Leung Ting Wing Tsun spread Wing Tsun Kung Fu in Europe where he and his student Keith-R-Kernspecht earned worldwide recognition.
Today, WT and Blitz defence are seriously developed. Agencies like the FBI, CIA, and SEK and other security forces across the world are taught the Wing Tsun techniques to protect others.
Can you explain how WT is learned, and the variety of tuitions you provide?
Wing Tsun Kung Fu can be considered as a long time study, based on the principles of Leung Tin. Wing Tsun offers the possibility to learn self-defence techniques in a relatively short time. We call this part ‘Blitz-defence'. In about two months, with two days training per week, you will be able to defend yourself against any threatening offence from outside. Please understand correctly, “blitz defence” does not relate to the training time but to the quick actions related to the defence techniques.
My fitness program is a separate part of my offer and is an ideal combination with Wing Tsun training. The fitness training is based on using your own body weight. This training is very effective and increases the power, stamina and coordination of your reflexes enormously. Not only will you get a body that looks powerful and fit, you are as well. Working with Gym equipment pumps up some muscles or muscle groups. Body Weight Fitness changes the entire body. Symmetric muscle contours are created and surplus body fat is lost. It is not in vain that this technique is practiced by thousands of athletes and martial arts competitors all over the world. Body Weight Fitness is an Art that changes a human being positively, no matter if your goal is to achieve competition standards, create a good figure or just feel a lot better. Body Weight Fitness gives you this possibility and fulfils what others promise. All courses can be done in (small) groups for a time period of at least three months if a set goal is to be reached.
For residents who are not here permanently, I prepare basic courses that can be continued in their home country. This is made possible through my membership in the International and European Wing Tsun organization (IWT & EWT) in over 60 countries.
Private tutoring can be made possible at flexible times upon request.
It must be made clear that the training is not only based on defence techniques, but also on strengthening your physiological behaviour in certain situations, learning to read the body language of an aggressor and to develop an own body language to cope with the situation.
Is there any fitness standards or age requirements to start training with you?
There is no age limit or health limit to practice Wing Tsun. Of course it makes sense to consult your physician before joining any fitness program but this is not mandatory. Any health issues should be reported on our membership form when signing up. I work with each member individually in order to discover the limits of each individual. The member also feels his limits.
Do you need any special equipment or clothes to begin training?
In general, no special protection gear is necessary. We use groin and fist protection. The reason we do not use over dimensioned protective equipment with Leung Tin Wing Tsun is to get closer to real situations. When you are packed into a protection suit a feeling of invincibility comes up which may lead to Kamikaze type attacks with serious consequences as you will probably not be wearing this gear on the street. With regard to clothing, it is not necessary to wear Wing Tsun gear for the fitness training in the beginning. When learning Wing Tsun, a uniform, which consists of black Chinese type trousers and a white T-shirt with the Wing Tsun Logo on the front and rear, is worn. For at least two reasons, it is important to wear the uniform; firstly, it identifies yourself with the sport you are practicing and secondly, it promotes a feeling of belonging together like a family. WT is a family system, of a large family.
Can you tell us about your teachers?
My Tutor (Sifu) is Klaus Schildert. He has got the 6-Master Degree and he is a direct student (Todai) from Keith Kernspecht (10th Master degree) who in return is student of Master Leung Ting (10th Master degree), chief trainer and leader of the European Wing Tsun organization (EWTO).
Is it necessary to go for belts or grades in Wing Tsun - are there specific targets?
Today, WTKuen (Kuen means Fist) is a widely spread technique. Due to a large number of students, systematic and programmed training cannot be avoided. In order to allow students of a large class to progress, exact training programs had to be made. The systematic WT training with 12 special programs, 4 technical programs and master degree programs is an ideal way to teach larger groups without losing out on quality. Another valuable advantage is that students from a certain WTS school can now enjoy their WT training in one of the many other schools in over 60 countries through the IWTA or EWTO organization. A student can simply continue in one school where he left off in another school.
In addition a teacher from one organization can replace any teacher from another organization at the same level without having to undergo many time consuming trials to proof his level. In earlier days it could happen that one student in a group of e.g. 10 students would learn certain techniques, another student not. The Systematic program guarantees that all students learn all techniques.
Can you tell us more about your own background and qualifications?
I was born in 1960 in Berlin , Germany . In terms of physical pursuits I started my career with American football, then moved on to judo and boxing, but didn't find what I was actually looking for. However in 1995 my Sifu, Klaus Schildert (5.PG), introduced me to Wing Tsun (Leung Ting Wing Tsun) and Escrima. After intensive Wing Tsun studies on Schloss Langenzell in Germany I opened my own school. I have now been a professional WT teacher for over 8 years and am a 2nd Level Technician. I have also been a bodyguard to international stars like Bruce Willis, Wesley Snipes, Pamela Anderson, Richard Gere and Michael Douglas, and worked as a movie stunt instructor and actor.
Can you outline some basic rules if we find ourselves in trouble?
Every reaction depends on the situation. Of course if you are fit and fast, you can run away. It is always better to recognize the situation and avoid confrontation or even change to the other side of the street.
How often do you do classes?
WT Training times:
Tuesday and Friday: 8:00 – 9:30, Tuesday and Saturday: 19:00 – 20:30
Fitness Training: Monday and Thursday 8:00 – 9:00
It is also possible to have private lessons outside of these times.
Where do you do your classes?
In general training is at Camp Khao Takiab. If the possibility opens to train at the Grand Sport hall, undisturbed by music, we will consider moving the evening training there (eventually in June 2007).
Sometimes we train on the beach or at one of the neighbouring temples. We usually decide it among ourselves where to go. In the near future, I am preparing to give classes In Bangkok twice a week.
Finally what about your life here, and why you chose Thailand and Hua Hin?
Besides my enthusiasm for Wing Tsun, there is another side of my life, my family; my wife Valerie, who is French but raised in Germany , and our three children. Vincent is 14 years old and goes to school at Somtawin in Hua Hin. Just as many kids of his age, his hobbies are, besides WT, Basketball, computer games and Internet surfing. Nikolas is 4 years old and goes to a Thai school in Khao Takiab. To add up all his interests would take ages, as he loves to do many things. Today he is a fisherman, tomorrow a Thai boxer, the day after tomorrow maybe a soldier, Kung Fu fighter, mountain climber etc. Jolie is the youngest; she is three years old and also goes to school in Khao Takiab. It is easy to sum up what she loves; anything as long as it is pink!
It was very important that the two younger kids interacted with the young kids in the neighbourhood. This is one of the reasons why we send them to Thai school; this concept has paid off, as Nikolas, after a few months, was able to translate from Thai to German for his parents. Both have a lot of friends.
Unfortunately, Nikolas was too old to attend Thai school, as he would not be able to follow the tutoring. He has had enough difficulties with his German school English to follow the lessons in the beginning. He now gets along fine. He also mastered the 10 Temple days, or maybe not, because there was nothing that was fun for a 14-year-old boy. No TV, no Internet, no computer games, no music except rest, meditation and prayer and no food after 12:00 pm. The temple was not as you can imagine. It was more like a roof over your head, sleeping under mosquito nets. None of the monks spoke English. We know grown ups who gave up after 24 hours although they slept in comfortable rooms and the monks spoke English! Besides our kids, we have a bag full of animals like Vento our German Shepherd. Tysson our cat with its short tail, which was a gift from one of the monks and Molly a Bullmastiff that we inherited here in Thailand . You can imagine that we never have a dull moment here.
We actually arrived in Thailand on September 30th, 2005. We wanted to come to Thailand sooner. After our holidays here, we were sure about one thing: Thailand it is! There were some obstacles like the pregnancy of my wife. The main reasons for moving to Thailand were Buddhism and of course, the Thai people.
We decided in favour of Hua Hin instead of one of the beautiful islands in view of the education and medical facilities for our children. Hua Hin has the necessary infrastructure, is not too small, not too big and only three hours away from Bangkok . Besides, here, we are able to live together with Thai people in our neighbourhood. We feel very comfortable and well here.

Songkran Festival 2007 at Hua Hin at Queen's Garden and Phon King Petch Park, including Nang Songkran and parade
Songkran – Are you prepared?
Okay guys, listen up. There's an army out there, armed to the teeth with the latest and greatest weapons.
You are the thin blue line. Are you ready for the onslaught? Well, then SOAK IT UP!
Yes it's Songkran again, or as it seems to becoming the ‘Water War' between whoever has water and whoever is dry. However the actual nature of the Songkran celebration is to welcome the Thai New Year and to wash away the bad from the old year, and a general cleansing process, which extends to everything. Over the next few pages we give our slightly tongue in cheek guide to surviving Songkran, or rather embracing it. So don your waterproofs, grab your water pistol and dive in!
Songkran this year in Hua Hin is being celebrated from the evening of Thursday 12th April through to Saturday 14th April, with Friday 13th being Thai New Year's Day
Defence
Swim goggles, ideal for defence and the occasional offensive ‘splash back' or friendly fire. Also rather ‘swish' and heroic if worn at a rakish angle in the ‘in' colour.
In the event of an attack the poncho is invaluable, allowing freedom of limbs for retaliation. Easy to stash away under bike seat or in boot of car. Popular colours are patriotic blue and crude black.
Be prepared. Don't assume because you are a seasoned marksman that you will not be ambushed. Our tip, stock up on fluffy towels.
Although often overlooked the simple umbrella can be useful in a tight situation. It can also declare your fashion status, so go for it.
For the hardened campaigner there is only one piece of equipment, the all over body suit.
the only moisture you will feel is sweat. Try accessorising with boots shown below.
Just because you are at war doesn't mean you can not be stylish. Startling yet trendy foot attire may distract the enemy long enough for escape.
Offence
If conflict escalates the weapon most readily at hand is the bucket. Although capable of providing substantial soakings both up close and at distance its weakness lies in its slow re-loading. Red or taupe are the current ‘must have' colours.
The weapon of choice for most aficionados is the super soaker. its ability to hit targets at up to 10 metres make it an invaluable first attack weapon. try weapons in clashing colours to make a statement
Note:
If you are a ‘farang' you are a prime target probably only second to the police. Children (of all ages) will get immense joy out of
Targeting you. If your not up to the challenge then stock up on videos and food.
The preferred weapon of many Thai's is talc as it marks the victim. a reminder of a deadly ambush. Practice at home before attempting throwing, as ‘blow back' can be a hazard.
For those requiring an easily concealed weapon the simple water pistol is invaluable.
However it is advisable to carry additional ammo, as they are prone to running out during extended engagements. Warning: don't stash in trouser pockets as leakage can cause embarrassment.
If conflict escalates and you ‘know' your enemy is concealing weapons of mass drenching, you might consider a pre-emptive strike, at this stage your weapon of choice is the hose. Use with care.
Note: white goes with everything.
If you are in a tight situation, surrounded by the enemy then the humble water bottle (left) may come to your rescue. Also a style statement as all models permanently carry a bottle.

Photo exibition - “The Beauty & The Chaos”
A photo exhibition by David Vee Rodden and YingYing - 3–29 April, 2007.
‘Pakistani Photos – The Beauty & The Chaos' is Australian photographer David Vee Rodden and his Belgian wife YingYing's first exhibition in Bangkok . This photo exhibition will coincide with the launch of David's first non-fiction travel narrative ‘A Pakistani House Husband (The Beauty & The Chaos)'. The exhibition and the book will depict surprising and intimate photography from Pakistan 's urban and rural life. The pictures were taken during David's and YingYing's three and a half year stay in Pakistan .
David and YingYing have been taking travel photos for over 10 years and their work has been exhibited in the National Gallery of Pakistan. They have travelled through South America , China , India , Pakistan , South East Asia, Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East . Due to their passion of searching for the heartbeat of any country they visit, David and YingYing have come up with an esoteric collection of photos.
David's book ‘A Pakistani House Husband' uncovers the myth and endeavours to dispel the bias some people in the West have about Pakistan . It's a humorous and informative out-take on what it's like to live as an expat in this very Muslim of countries.
‘[A Pakistani House Husband is] entertaining and diverse, a trip through real and imagined worlds; part road trip and part mythical odyssey. Gives new meaning to what it is like to be in strange lands, in both body and mind.' Fred Slangen, Dutch Book editor and publisher.
‘A Pakistani House Husband is a very good book, funny and interesting...' Nicolas Philip, Swiss travel writer.
‘. . . uniquely Australian, a colourful journey through both mind and environment, an importantly topical cultural exchange . . .' Scarlet R. Blade, Australian Musician/artist.
The joint launch of the photo exhibition and book ‘A Pakistani House Husband' will take place on the 4th of April from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm at the Garden Gallery & Café, Neilson Hays Library.
On the night David Vee Rodden and Pisut Pratheepasena (a Professor from the faculty of Music Silpakorn University ) will revive those “beat” days circa late 50's a la Jack Kerouac & Al Cohn & Zoot Sims with a riposte interplay recital, between saxophone and voice.
This is to say – emotive improvisation v. metaphysical perceptions of Pakistan – a fusion of melody and language.
If you would like further information about the artists, or the opportunity to interview David Vee Rodden and YingYing, please contact Susanne van Laarhoven, Curator of the Rotunda Gallery, by e-mail at susannevl@yahoo.com or mobile phone at 087 800 8965.
The Rotunda opening hours are: Tuesday-Sunday 9.30am - 17.00.
Operation Smile - Making a Difference.
Here's why what we do really matters. Around 2,000 children are born in Thailand every year with cleft lips, cleft palates, or other facial deformities. They go through childhood, often isolated and insecure, unable to make friends at home or at school. They grow into adults, unable to comfortably integrate into society – unable to fulfil their potential as contributors to their local communities or to live a full life with normal relationships. They endure a lifetime of psychological pain. A relatively simple, one-hour operation can change their lives, Many have told us, after going through an operation, that they feel as if they have been born again and given a new chance in life – making new friends, and winning new self-confidence at home and in class. They move from a life in hiding, to a normal, productive life in their communities. For those receiving cleft palate operations, it is often the first time that they will be able to eat and drink normally.
Here's What We Do: Through a network of hospitals, doctors, surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, hospital staff and volunteers we provide surgery to correct these facial deformities to nearly 1000 children every year – free. And we want to do more. The medical professionals in the programme donate their time and skills. We select children and adults to benefit from this programme when their deformities are serious enough to impact their lives and when we can make a difference to them. Only patients who suffer from economic hardship qualify to receive the free operation and free post-operational care. We will also support the costs of a caretaker (usually the mother or the father) to travel and accompany the child during the time of the operation and the period of recovery. Some complex cases may require multiple operations and the use of more specialized equipment that is only available in Bangkok and other children who have had their cleft palates corrected may need speech therapy. In addition, to support local self-sufficiency, we provide surgical equipment and materials to local medical specialists. We also give them the opportunity to interact and get training with more experienced medical experts from Bangkok and abroad – for example, we fund internship opportunities in the USA .
Our Organisation in Thailand and Globally
Our Foundation in Thailand is part of the worldwide network of around 25 such organizations of Operation Smile International, a not-for-profit organization that provides free reconstructive surgery all over the world. Founded by plastic surgeon Dr Bill Magee and his wife Kathleen, Operation Smile International and its network have been active since 1982 by helping more than 100,000 patients.
We have been active in Thailand since 1997 by providing surgery to around 5,000 patients. Currently we carry out around 1,000 free operations organised in several Surgery Missions throughout the year. These missions vary in size from 60-150 patients. In a limited but growing number of cases we also provide more complex reconstructive surgery and cranio-facial surgery. Of course, we are unable to do any of this vital work without the great help of our Sponsors and of our Medical Teams consisting of dozens of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and hundreds of nurses and volunteers.
Here's How You Can Help!: You can help thousands of children and adults transform their lives. If you would like to offer a corporate sponsorship or individual donation and would like to get involved, we would welcome your visit to see the Operation Smile Team in action in the field. THANK YOU for thinking about helping!
Any donation will have a positive impact. Contributions-both cash and in-kind – are an investment in a brighter future for our patients, their families, and their community.
You can help us to help others! If you wish, you can transfer your donation to
