Fit for Golf
Knee problems seem to be common at the moment. With the strains of golf or even getting around town the knees come in for some fierce pounding. Over a matter of time the structures in the joint wear, the result being pain and loss of movement. If the discomfort gets too bad then a trip to the doctor is required but there are some exercises that can be performed to keep the knee strong and help to limit or even stop the pain.
The first thing when exercising is to make sure it is pain free. The reason the body give out pain signals is to tell you something is wrong. If you know that a movement or position will be uncomfortable then don't do it!
A good easy exercise that will maintain the strength in the thigh muscles and not move the joint are static contractions. Once the leg is in a position that is not uncomfortable the muscles are tightened but the leg stays still. This may take a little mastering as some of you will want to over tighten the muscles and this will get the knee to bend or straighten. Work both the back and front of the thigh muscles. Hold each contraction for 2-3 seconds and repeat each one 30 times.
This next exercise moves on a little from the one above. Again there has to be no pain while performing the movement. Sit on a chair with the leg fully supported, something like a garden bench. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. There should be about 20-30o of bend in the leg. Straighten the leg as you contract the front thigh muscles. Hold this position for 2-3 seconds before you relax. Repeat 30 times. As the muscles respond to the exercise the intensity can be increased. This is be done by adding a small amount of weight to the ankle, but don't overdo it.
For the back of the thigh, sit with the legs over the front of a seat so a ball can be placed behind the knee. Ideally the ball should be 20 cm across but just make sure you can maintain a grip on it between the thigh and calf muscle. Work one leg at a time, as it is easier to control. Squeeze the ball and again hold for 2-3 seconds. Repeat 30 times. You may find the muscle wants to cramp up on the first few times that this is performed. If you feel this happening then lightly stretch out the leg to stop the tightness.

Banyan walk the walk
Thursday 23 March 2007, The Banyan Estate and Golf Club and Siam Property held an “official” opening of the Mountain paths from the Banyan Estate grounds to the Banyan Golf Course following the extensive ground work to the pathways and surrounding areas.
A fantastic number of clients and prospective clients attended, to enjoy a “leisurely” walk amongst the natural mountain surroundings whilst stopping from time to time to admire the “breathtaking” views across Hua Hin to the ocean, with the many cameras kept very busy indeed. Many people commented how wonderful the drive in golf carts will be from The Banyan Estate to the Golf course clubhouse when opened in 2008.
Waiting to greet everyone upon arrival, on the newly prepared par three sixth hole, with a very welcome cold drink and buffet were Han and Arnold representing the Banyan Investors, Siam Property staff and Khun Op, the golf course designer . Han, to the delight of everyone, announced and invited all to participate in a “nearest the pin” competition as a fun celebration of the opening day.
The competition (and refreshments) was enthusiastically participated in by all with an amazing array of Golf skills being displayed! The par 3, from its elevated tee was playing 138 yds against the wind with each player hitting 3 balls.
Finally following a close competition the top prize of a years membership to The Banyan Golf Course was awarded to Mick Wittering by Han. Arnold and Han also awarded several runners up prizes of complimentary days green fees on behalf of the Banyan Golf Club to the delight of everyone.
Later following more refreshments and “lively” conversations, making new friends and fun, delighted clients were driven around the newly prepared course to enjoy and photograph the amazing scenery and a spectacular sunset, a hallmark feature of The Banyan Golf Course.

What are Standard Scratch (SSS) and Competition Standard Scratch (CSS)?
Standard Scratch is the score a scratch player is expected to make in ideal condition over a measured course. Competition Standard Scratch is the score from which handicaps are adjusted after a competition had been completed, and is assessed from the SSS and takes into account conditions on the day and players performances.
So how do we determine CSS?
Most handicapping authorities use a computer, and this will work the CSS out for you. However it is useful to know how it works and this is best explained by working it out manually. The ideal is to relate to a competition. You will need the Unified Standard Scratch and Handicapping Book, so for this I have produced the necessary table from that book, Fig 1 and Fig 2. You need to know how many competitors, how many players in each category, and the number of players who scored 2 under par (34 points in stableford) or better.
Example. A stableford competition with 28 players, 2 Category 1 players (0-5) 12, Cat 2 (6-12) and the remaining 14 (players Cat 3,4 and 5 (over 13 handicap)). 4 players scores 34 points of better.
The SSS is 71.
First we go to Fig 1 (Appendix E) and complete the boxes A through to L. Box A says Cat 1 players, so that is 2, box B (Cat 2) and C (remainder) are 12 and 14, and Box E is 4 (4 player better than 34 points). These figures are now transferred to boxes F. G. and H but as a percentage of the competitors,
e.g. Box G is 12 players x 100 divided by 28 competitors = 43%.
Box F using same formula will be 2x100 divided by 28 = 7.1%,
And H will be 4 x 100 divided by 28 = 14.2%. All that remains now is to transfer these % into boxes I, J, K but to the nearest 10%. Therefore I will be 10% J will be 40% which means J will be 50%, (10+40 = 50 from 100 =50) and L is the nearest whole number which is 14%.
We now have all the information to determine the CSS, so off to Fig 2 (Appendix G Table B). We search down the left hand column until we find 10% - 40% - 50%, (I, J & K in previous table) then we move across the table until we come to the line that contains 14% (L in previous table), this is the line 12-17%. We then follow that line up until we come to the top of the table, which says +1. We add 1 to the SSS so the CSS is 71 +1 = 72. Handicaps are now adjusted to 72 instead of 71.
