Hua Hin Hash House Harriers
Run number 93 was hared by Long Ron and Quick Mickey Mou in the area of the Springfield Dam. A sunny Saturday started off hot and humid and increased in intensity until it was time for the Hash to meet at the run site. When most of the hashers arrived at the car park, the hares were still out in the hills refreshing the trail they had set on Friday. Near the top of the highest hill in the area smoke billowed from a brush fire that swiftly climbed to the peak and dropped out of sight to the north pushed on by the warm afternoon breeze. Some of us were concerned for the safety of the hares while more of us were concerned about the sanity of being on a hash on a smoking hot Saturday afternoon. One or two voiced the concern that Quick Mick might have returned to his old habit of smoking the vegetation that drew him to the Hash to begin with.
It turned out that our worries were groundless as the hares returned to the car park in plenty of time to get the run/walk started off in the right direction. They denied that they were anywhere near the top of old Smokey and Quick Mick ensured all of us that ever since his introduction to the Hash House Harriers he has no longer felt it necessary to mess with wacky tabacky. He says that just being around most of us is enough of a trip.
Before the run/walk began, Long Ron got the attention of the two dozen hashers to let them all know that they might be in for a bit of a treat at the end of the day. He proclaimed run #93 to be the ‘Lucky Number' run and instructed all of the hashers to seek him out somewhere along the hash trail to be provided with a number printed on a ticket to be held until the circle after the end of the run. Long Ron wisely held off providing anyone a number until all had completed at least half the run as he suspected that many would just shortcut the run and head back in to the car park if he gave them the lucky numbers too early along the trail. Long Ron is not always right and he is never wrong which he readily proved when some runners began to shortcut the run as soon as they had what they hoped would be hot tickets.
As for the trail, the run began near a small irrigation canal just a bit to the east of the Springfield dam. Running north with the canal to the left and brittle, dry and yellow brush and weeds to the right, the trail took a hard left across a wooden footbridge designed for Hollow Legs because of the extreme height of half a meter. Two quick steps along the plank and on solid ground, the trail then ran uphill and over the embankment of the dam itself and then dropped down into the basin that is a lake of rapidly lessening depth. As we ran deeper into the summer evening and further from the setting sun we soon found the trail leaving the lake and heading straight up into the hills where we earlier saw smoke from smouldering embers and of course the burning bush. On into the shadows of approaching sunset we were pleasantly surprised to fine ourselves being cooled off by mist from the occasional spray of water from a leaking irrigation system of Watana gardens. Without having to brave the flames or choke on the smoke of the brush fire in the higher elevations, the trail took a sudden drop to meander through the dry bamboo near the bottom of the hill a bit north of where we went up. On on the trail continued until it came out on a dirt track near a fence enclosing the Springfield golf course property. It was here that Long Ron gave up most of his ‘lucky numbers' and also that the trail split in two directions. To the right was the walkers trail, a shortcut to the beer cooler. To the left, the runners trail shot straight off in a direction exactly the opposite of the track back to the beer. Hard running Ballbanger got his number and headed off on the runners trail only to quickly duck beneath the barbed wire of the fence to take a shortcut back to the cooler. Ballbanger had been hashing for more than 30 years and knew well how quickly ice can melt on a hot summer day.
On, on the trail went along the dirt road and then it turned back toward the lake for a few hundred meters of jogging/slogging along the muddy shore. From the shoreline the trail once again climbed the bank of the dam coming out near the gazebo where the hash has enjoyed other evenings and then the trail went back down the hill, again across the foot bridge over the small klong and back to the car park and the cooler.
Once all of the runners and walkers were back in the car park and accounted for, the hashers began to quickly lighten the load in the beer cooler while enjoying the cooling of the day and the colouring of the sky where the setting sun left orange clouds with pink highlights.
As Slackbladder was out of town and out of touch, Ballbanger called a quick circle for the routine and requisite hash nonsense to welcome newcomers, visitors and returnees, to make hash announcements, and to make an ass of himself in general.
Then he turned the circle over to Long Ron for the Lucky Number drawing. As it turned out, almost every hasher present had a hot ticket and everyone won a prize by hook or by crook. There were running shorts, walking shorts and short shorts. Can openers, fat pills and other useless objects that ended up making for another great hash day. Well done, Long Ron!
Once the beer had all left the cooler, the Hash called it a day and headed off for a good buffet at the Chicken Coop in Cha Am. Once again Noi & Sparky provided us with the good grub that has us returning routinely. Of course the beer was ice cold too. It was also at the Chicken Coop that we all bid adieu to Cannonballs and Piste Again as they return to the Isle of Man until October. We all look forward to their return.

Hua Hin Pool League
Almost half way through the season at press time, and the leagues are starting to take shape. The Third division is the most hotly contested with only a few points separating a handful of teams, while Lucky Shot A are really stamping their authority on the Premier League, opening up a 4 point gap at the top, although P & P have games in hand and are sure to push them all the way. Many teams appear to have played a lot less matches but a lot of this is due to score sheets not being handed in, so please can the team captains ensure this is done on the night of the match. Another request is that all captains read the weekly reports so they can keep their teams informed of both the current standings in team and individual rankings, as well as any important news or requests. Due to print deadlines the tables shown here are always a couple of weeks behind, and this season due to space considerations the full individual tables will only be available in the weekly report or on the website http://www.huahinpool.multiservers.com. Abbreviated individual tables will appear in the June issue.

Pub quiz
Apologies for no mention of the quiz in the Observer over the past couple of months. This is because Terry has been in hospital having knee surgery and Hugo has been flat out training Thailand . But the quiz has been going on regardless. Scores have been around the 75% for right answers and everyone seems to have enjoyed the varied and challenging subjects.
Some of the more obscure sets of questions that the quizzers were exposed to were “telephone dialling codes” and a “tie breaker” round that was pure guesswork. You will be glad to hear that not all of what is on offer is impossible to answer. General knowledge is a stalwart along with plenty of historical, sports and entertainment variations.
The team name challenge always gets the audience thinking. Any topical or slightly warped names win a prize.
To whet the appetite here are some of the brainteasers asked in the last feast of mental agility.
How was William Bonney better known? (Wild West)
How many test runs did Don Bradman score? 6478, 6996 or 7014 (Tie Breaker)
What have the US Marines banned their soldiers from wearing? (Current Affairs)
If you know the answer to the above and would like to take on the quizmasters then come down to Dick's Office on the 6th and 20th of this month. The quiz gets underway about 20.00 and is over by about 22.00. A great night is had by all so don't miss out.
