Fit for Golf
When people think of exercise they usually think of sweating on a treadmill and pushing heavy weights. Well that type of training has “gone out with the ark”. The health industry is now focusing on improving the overall movement of the body as opposed to the working of particular muscles. Developing muscles in isolation can be detrimental to the neural system, as the body can't work out why you only want to make part of a movement. We are designed to move ourselves or objects from one point to another. We have lots of joints and muscles to perform the task with. We have a computer system, the brain, to make sure the task is completed as easily as possible. So why only use part of that system? When this is applied to golf it is not hard to see why functional and not isolation training, will be more appropriate to improving the game.
Here are a couple of exercises that can be performed which will improve mobility as well as strengthen the muscles in an all round way. Weight can be added to the movement but to start with try them without added resistance. Firstly make sure that the body is in neutral, see previous articles. To improve balance and work the rotation of the trunk move the torso to the left turning the hips with the shoulders. As you turn the left foot stays planted but the right heel comes up while the toes turn to the left. Once facing the left bend the body from the hips and reach towards the floor. Maintain the body in neutral throughout. Return to the centre and then repeat towards the right. To advance this movement just hold something weighted, but always make sure you can control the posture.
For the next exercise start with the knees bent, spine in neutral and the hands just in front of the body. Imagine you are placing a box on the floor and you will be close. Turn to the left and start to lift the arms up. By the time you are upright the arms should be stretched above the head and the body will have made a 90o turn to the left and back to the front. Proceed to turn to the right and drop the arms down in front. When the arms are at the bottom again, turn and go back to the right still turning to 90o until you reach the top. The feet stay planted throughout the motion. The range of movement is governed by the flexibility of the body. Only turn in a range that is achievable and pain free. Repeat the above about 15 times each side but if the control starts to falter stop there.

Players' responsibilities
Every player who enters a competition has certain responsibilities apart from playing by the rules. They should ensure that they arrive at the tee having completed those responsibilities or with plenty of time to complete them, not 1 minute before tee off. They are: -
Checking number of clubs. Remember you can only carry 14 clubs maximum,
If you have more you cannot declare them out of play or leave the extra ones on the cart floor, if you carry them you are in breach of rule 4-4 whether you use them or not, also see decision 4-4c/1. Penalty, match play loss of hole with a maximum of 2 holes, stroke play 2 shots per hole with a maximum of 4 shots
Scorecard. It is your responsibility to enter name, date and handicap on the scorecard. Failure to enter a handicap or one higher than you are entitled to means disqualification. See rule 6-2 and 6-6b. Failure to put your name on gives many problems to the handicap sec. (beware)
Exchanging cards. Before commencing the round players should exchange cards with playing partners, the person who has your card is your marker. After each hole the marker should confirm the score made from the competitor and enter it for that hole. Any errors should be corrected and initialled. On completion of the round the competitor and marker should check scores and sign the cards before returning them to the committee. The best way to score a card is to put the competitors' scores on one line and the markers scores on another line; this makes it easy to check scores.
Marking Ball. Nowhere in the rules does it say you must put an identification mark on your ball, however rule 6-5 and 12-2 does say players should put an identification mark on the ball. Personally I think “should” should be “MUST”, that would eliminate any confusion. If you go to find your Titliest Pro V1 No 2 in the rough, and when you get there find 2 the same, which is yours? I put a red dot either side of the makers' name, you choose your own.
Finally always ensure you know the competition rules and which tee to use.
You are now ready to start play, so over the coming months we will play 18 holes, and try to bring up as many rules situations as possible.

Butterfly Rock Golf
With the sad loss of our Vice Captain and founder member Steve Ross we have had to do some reorganizing, and took this opportunity to strengthen the committee by adding 2 extra members. David Rawlings has accepted the position of Vice Captain, and Phil Simons has joined the committee, which is:
Mike Ford - Captain and Handicap Secretary
Davis Rawlings - Venues, Observer articles and membership fee collection
Paul Frampton - Secretary/Treasurer and membership Administration
John Anstee - Competition entry, 2's competition, Near pins, Monday Roll Up and green fee database.
Phil Simons - Assist John with above and responsible for away trips.
Each of these tasks has a deputy in case required.
Additional to the committee members we have Robin Heath looking after Friday Roll Up, Brian Reeve coordinating the Order of Merit, and Kevin Dwyer as Webmaster. We thank them all for the work they do.
By the time this article is in print, the Pattaya trip will be over and done, and we will be looking into our next 2 trips, to Ratchburi sometime in the near future, and to Nichigo at Kanchanaburi 15th to 19th October.
Last month we included a new venue to our list Dhanarat, the Army course in Pranburi, although the condition was not on par with other courses, we had a good day, and by looking at all the work going on, fairway watering, lake construction for water, and improvements to the already very good layout, I can see it being a good course in a year or so. We returned for another visit in May.
Results. Apologies for last month, somehow the result did not get into the magazine. However you can always see them on Master Scoreboard
www.masterscoreboard.co.uk all you need is the password (partner) and you can see all the qualifying results and handicaps.
