Hua Hin Online Community
Hot topics this month on the Hua Hin forum were actually wet topics as there was plenty of discussion on the recent deluges we have had. Several tropical storms have caused heavy rainfall in the area and some flooding along Petchkasem Road and downtown. The concern is that this is the beginning of the rainy season and we have another four months of it to look forward to!
The theme park saga raises its head again with reports in national newspapers of large expanses of land in Cha-am being earmarked for development. Plenty of discussion on this as the arguments for and against such a large development and impact on the local community are laid out. Another related topic is the future of Hua Hin and what it will be like in the year 2029; some have visions of a great Riviera of resorts and high-rise condos stretching from Hua Hin to Cha-am, high-speed monorails linking it to Bangkok and international air connections. Others see it as possibly going back to its old quiet fishing village origins following an economic and political collapse in the Kingdom. Either way change is inevitable and it made for an interesting discussion.
Accommodation hunters have another option as we welcome Putahracsa resort to our booking system; luxury villas are on offer here however they also have a fine restaurant and bar and welcome local expats. Accommodation will become scarce for the Hua Hin jazz festival weekend so get online and book early. The organizers finally unveiled the press release and official dates of 8th and 9th of June. It seems to be a smaller affair this year with only one main stage and two nights. Hope to see you there and look out for the photos in next months issue!
Speaking of events there were a few additions there with parties at Johnnie Walkers bar, planning for this years dragon boat race, and plenty of talk about local trips and tours. Hua Hin tours can now be booked through www.tourismhuahin.com who have partnered up with leading tour operators in town to offer trips to National Parks and other places of interest.
The legal and visa section has been busy with lots of confusion and conflicting information regarding visa extension requirements. People have also had difficulty opening bank accounts and transferring money overseas; whether this is another clampdown slowly being enforced has yet to be seen. The forums just give expats and visitors alike an opportunity to share experiences and ask for advice.
A few concerned parents were asking about the location of the new Somtawin School , there is a complete schools page on www.expathuahin.com and we shall endeavour to keep readers updated with the latest details if we can get them.
Internet censorship came under the spotlight last month as a number of news articles highlighting the increase of website blocking in Thailand were posted. We hope that this trend will not continue and take Thailand into the same category as China , Burma and North Korea , three of the most repressed countries in the world for internet freedom. On the subject of websites a new, handy one page resource of all Hua Hin websites has been launched, you can find it at www.hua-hin.in.th and get yourself included if you run a website about Hua Hin.
HHAD forums are the definitive online message boards and discussions for the area with over 2,400 members. There are sections for finding and booking accommodation, seeking out bargains, and exploring the local area and beyond. There is also a nightlife section for the night owls, a restaurant and feeding guide along with an online meeting point for visa runners and clubs. The ever popular “Ask the expats” section is great for quickly getting the answers you need from the people that live here.

HUA HIN JAZZ FESTIVAL 2007
The 6th annual Hua Hin Jazz Festival, ‘Jazz On The Beach', will be held this year over two days, on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th June 2007. All the details were announced at a press conference held at The Emporium in Bangkok on 3rd May, which included performances from some of the artists taking part this year. The event always draws thousands to the town from near and far, and is now an established part of the jazz calendar. This year's headline acts from abroad are Caroline Henderson from Sweden , and the duo Montefiori Cocktail from Italy . They are backed up by some fine Thai talent, including Ben Chalatit & Mariam Alcalali, formerly part of the group B5, Prode Tanapat and Dr Denny Euprasert, the last two having appeared at the Festival before.
A special mention should go to Heineken, who are once again the main sponsors of the event, through the Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co., Ltd who produce the beer in Thailand , as well as CM Organizer Co., Ltd and the Hoteliers Club in Hua Hin who have put the whole thing together. For those travelling by car to the event, there will be special parking areas at Tessaban Baan Hua Hin School , Hua Hin Vittayalai School and Hua Hin Market Village .
CAROLINE HENDERSON
Caroline Henderson's roots in jazz stem from her father Rudy, a black American jazz musician, who met her mother Gunilla in the late 1950s.
On moving to America Caroline began attending school in Philadelphia toward the end of the ‘60s, segregation was theoretically part of a sordid past, but the problem of racial affiliation was still a highly practical problem. It was a relief when her parents enrolled her in a multi-ethnic school.
In 1970 Caroline moved to Paris ' 16th arrondissement with her mother and brother. She attended a French girls school along with the daughters of diplomats and local socialites.
For a short while she thought her calling was as a circus princess, but other than that she never wavered from a career in music, song and theatre. She started on her own right after ninth grade, tackling one of the most difficult disciplines of all: jazz. She performed publicly, singing “I've Got Rhythm”, “The Man I Love” and “Don't Explain”. She sang backing vocals in various groups: “Modern Sound Corporation” and “Rockamöllan”, and started her own band, “Taxi”, which toured Europe . She did modelling on the side.
Following countless tours and record sales in the hundreds of thousands, Caroline left the band Ray Dee Ohh for a solo career. In 1995 her first solo release “Cinemataztic” brought bouquets of roses from the reviewers. The pop vocalist had shaved her head, found her own footing, and sang away any doubts about her talent with the hit “Made In Europe”. At that year's Danish Music Awards she took all the awards available, making the long walk up to the stage no less than seven times.
“Metamorphing” followed in 1998, and in 2000 Caroline changed direction once again, launching her alter ego, Dolores, who appears on the disco offering, “Dolores J – The Butterfly.”
In 2003 Caroline's third son, Loui, was born, and Caroline began her affiliation with the jazz label Stunt Records. In November 2003 “Don't Explain” was released. A back-to-basics album in a minimalist production, it warmed the hearts of critics at home and abroad, and again the vocalist was rewarded with rave reviews
“Made In Europe” was released in 2005 in Sweden , Norway , Poland , Germany , France , Spain , Portugal , USA and Canada . In July Japanese Columbia released the album in Japan , which results in two trips to Japan that year with concerts and promotion work.
The year yielded steady concert work, adding up to a total of more than 50 concerts. A few of the highlights were at the legendary jazz club Café Central in Madrid, and opening the Copenhagen Jazz Festival for the second consecutive year on the outdoor stage in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens. There was also a successful tour of Poland and a set of concerts with Odense 's Symphony Orchestra in November.
In November 2005 Caroline's father, jazz musician Rudy Henderson died in New York . In December Caroline brought together her steady band and began recording her new album “Love or Nothin'” in the woods of Skåne.
“Love or Nothin'” was released in April 2006 in Japan on Columbia Records. In May, Caroline and her band completed another tour of Poland including four sold-out concerts in Warsaw and Poznan . The album was released in Denmark September 5 on STUNT Records. The title is taken from the song sung by Marlene Dietrich in the movie Blue Angel, 1930.
You can expect a powerful and sultry performance from Caroline to close the festival on the Saturday.
MONTEFIORI COCKTAIL
Montefiori Cocktail is a duo formed by twins who play different musical instruments: Francesco (Kekko) on keyboards and Federico (Kikko) on sax, flute and vocals.
Before becoming Montefiori Cocktail the two brothers, sons of sax player Germano Montefiori a talented 60's and 70's musician, worked separately, Francesco as a producer of house and breakbeat music, while Federico played sax in many bands.
Their career as Montefiori Cocktail started in 1997 with the release of “Raccolta n. 1” followed by “Raccolta n. 2” in 2000 and “Re*Shaken-remixes album” in 2002, published by Irma.
After three years and their move to Sir Richard Branson's V2 Records, their third album, titled “Raccolta n.3”, was released in November 2003.
In 2006 “A Taste of Montefiori Cocktail”, a compilation of the best of their work was released on Irma Records and their latest album “ Montefiori Appetizer Vol. 1” on EMI, which you can expect to hear some of at the festival.
Their music is inspired by the sound that used to be called “Easy Listening” and that has become in its modern form, “Lounge Music”.
Montefiori are Italy 's major representative of the easy listening evolution, offering the 60's sounds enriched with technological elements.
They revive the 60's cult soundtracks, music from TV commercials, while travelling on Star Trek's spaceship of melancholy to sail in the ocean of “de-ja vù” and easy dance. It's music to have fun with, for relaxed people and more.
Many of their tracks have been used for opening titles or as a musical background at both local and international radio and TV stations and they have also been featured in famous TV commercials for well-known brands and have been used in film soundtracks. Probably the best-known use of their work was in the US hit series “Sex And The City”, which they contributed a number of songs to.
They have an incredible “live” history: from 1997 up till today they have played in over five hundred concerts in Italy and around the world, they took part in many important festivals such as Festival Jazz in Montreux, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Warsaw . They have played in locations that are considered music temples such as Jazz Café, Blow Up, Madame Jo-Jo, Cargo in London , Cabaret Savauge in Paris, Casanova Revue, VolskGarten, B72 in Vienna .
In 1997 they played in a month long tour of the States in cities like New York , Los Angeles , San Francisco , Philadelphia and many others. They have also toured extensively in Russia .

“Vivace”
An exhibition of oils by Louise Truslow
Louise Truslow's latest collection of oils is an exploration of light and movement. As the title suggests, “Vivace” is full of lively, energetic works. The dominant theme of the exhibition is performance – an idea that is explored through subjects such as swirling dancers, dramatic street festivals and competitive swimmers. The pictures have strong, vibrant colours, deep shadows and brilliant light blurred and refracted by the movement of the subjects.
Each painting has its own intense atmosphere and draws the viewer into the scene. With a spectacular golden dragon the excitement of Chinese New Year celebrations comes alive, whilst whirling dancers show the exhilaration of their performance. A more intimate mood is created with paintings portraying koi carp with sparkling reflections and a small girl running through the dappled light of an apple orchard.
Originally from England , Louise has been based in Thailand since 1990. She has exhibited annually in Bangkok since 1997 and has had over 12 solo exhibitions. She has been a permanent exhibitor at La Luna Gallery, Chiang Mai, since its opening in 2004. Her exhibitions have attracted great public interest and wide critical acclaim and her work is held in private and corporate collections in many countries around the world.
In a recent profile of the artist, Art Consultant and Curator Mariana Atkins wrote: “Louise is a strong communicator who meticulously researches and studies her subject before presenting the finished work. In her oil paintings Louise pays careful attention to the play of light on her subjects and employs strong contrast in her colours to achieve this. She is particularly successful in her use of the negative space in her paintings and utilizes the blank canvas to great effect. Louise has gained much recognition for her body of work and is considered one of the leading expatriate artists working in Bangkok today.”
“Vivace” is a collection of powerful and exciting pictures that showcases a striking new direction for Louise. The exhibition opens with a Charity Private View and Auction (which will provide educational scholarships for underprivileged children and medication for HIV positive orphans) and will then run from June 2nd until July 1st.
The exhibition runs from 2nd June– 1st July 2007 at The Rotunda Gallery, Neilson Hays Library, 195 Surawong Road , Bangkok . Tel: 02-233-1731. Opening hours are: Tue – Sun 09:30 - 17.00.
