Hua Hin Golf Society
At Black Mountain Golf Club. On 15th June we were at the newest course in this area, and what a spectacular day it turned out to be.
Sixty-four players entered and the field was completed without any dropouts. We played a 4 Ball Texas Scramble that gave everyone a chance. The winning score was 55.5 (see results). The reception we received from Kenny Walker and his staff was excellent, and we will be returning there shortly.
Hua Hin Golf Society On Tour
(Chiang Rai 22 26th April)
The results were promulgated in last month's edition, but we must mention that a rookie member of the society Palin Borijark (Humphrey) swept everything before her. Starting with a handicap of 36, she scored 42 points, then was cut to 32 handicap and scored 27 and 41 points on days two and three respectively. A total of 110 points, which gave her a winning margin of 11 points.

Fit for Golf
One of the best pieces of equipment to come into fitness over the last decade is the fitball. This is a ball about 65 cm across, depending on the height of the person using it, which is filled with air. The basic idea behind it is that your balance is improved and the core muscles are developed. If you choose to purchase one of these balls make sure it is the right size for your height. If you are under 5' 5 (164 cm) then a 55 cm ball is right. 5' 6 to 5' 10 (166-177 cm) 65 cm ball and over that a 75 cm ball is right for you.
Once you have the ball what can be done with it. Here are a couple of exercises that will help strengthen the core and legs. If there is any injuries to the body then make sure that you get checked out to see if these exercises are safe for you. Call
fit-foregolf on the number below to for an assessment.
Getting into position for the first exercise may take a bit of effort. Sit on the ball and then walk forward as you lay back on the ball. The ball will roll up the back, move to a spot where the head and shoulders are resting on the ball. Feet hip width apart. Make sure the back is in neutral and pull the belly button into the spine without moving the back. Now you are set. The knees are to stay in the same position, not to move back or forward. Drop the hips down as far as you can without anything else moving. Make sure you stay on the ball! Lift the hips up while the body stays still. Repeat 15 times.
The next one is performed in the same position. This time the shoulders are to move from side to side. Keep the shoulders parallel to the floor. A pole across the chest will help to maintain you in level. As the shoulders go across the feet should be shuffled with them. This keeps the body aligned. Don't let the feet get too far in front of the torso. The range of movement is governed by the control of the body. If the shoulders drop you are moving over too much. To save the neck muscles from over working put the tongue on the roof of the mouth. Repeat this 10 times each way. The Mike Ford Golf Admin Clinic
We are on the first tee ready to commence our round. Firstly the teeing ground. It is a rectangle the sides of which are the line between the tee blocks and its parallel 2 clubs length deep, you must tee up within that area, however you may stand outside the area to play the ball. If the ball falls off the tee after address, it is not a penalty and you can re-tee.
Player A tees off and his ball finishes in an old divot. Player B's ball finished just off the fairway in the rough alongside a young tree that has a stake supporting it. In both of these situation you must play the ball as it lies, unless there is a local rule to give you another option, so make sure you know the local rules. If player B was entitled to relief under a local rule, he should first mark the ball before picking it up (Rule20-1), he then takes relief in accordance with (Rule 24-2b(1)), 1 club length from nearest point of relief not nearer the hole, if that puts him back on the fairway, no problem. So where is the nearest point of relief? It is the nearest point from the original ball position (that is why you marked it before lifting) that allows you to play a shot without damaging the young tree, you should establish this point with the club you intend to play. Having established that point you put a tee peg into the ground, measure 1 club length from that tee peg (not nearer the hole) and put another tee peg in the ground. You then drop the ball between the 2 tee pegs, if the ball rolls towards the hole, into a hazard of more than 2 club lengths from the point where it first touched the ground, you re-drop. If not, the ball is in play.
Both balls are now on the green, and have been marked correctly, (see note to Rule 20-1). The problem in Thailand occurs when the ball is replaced by the caddie. Having replaced the ball, they lift the tee marker, and then press down the area from which the tee marker was taken. Unfortunately they are taught to do this. It is in fact a breach of (Rule 13-2) Improving lie, area of intended stance or swing, or line of play. My tip is to replace the ball yourself.
Watch TV and see who replaces the ball on the Asian Tour when they are using local caddies.
On to the next tee, who has the honour? In matchplay it is the player who won the last hole or the last hole to be won. In strokeplay it is the player who had the lowest score at the last hole. But beware, stableford is in fact a form of strokeplay, and decision 32-1/3 says that in a Stableford competitions the player with the lowest net score has the honour, so if both players had 4's but 1 received a stroke, that player would have a better net score and of course the honour.
Earlier we talked about 1 club length, the question is always raised which club?
The rule only says 1 club length, there is no stipulation which club you should or can use, or even from which bag the club may be taken from. The only agreement that has been reached is among tour professionals and that is you should not used a long handled putter, I think amateurs should also adopt this rule.

Butterfly Rock Golf
May has been a difficult month for golfers in Hua Hin with the weather playing a prominent part in many events and meetings. Nevertheless, the golfers of BRGC have persisted with their Wednesday competitions, Monday roll-ups at Lake View and Friday roll-ups at Palm Hills. Certainly, two or three have ended prematurely with one in particular, at Lake View , spectacularly! The lucky ones were closest to the Club House and the others risked drowning. The picture of Jim Lynch clinging to a tree in near hurricane force winds will live long in the memory.
The principal competition in May was for the Whippet Trophy (see picture), newly donated by our Secretary/Treasurer, Paul Frampton and hotly contested at Majestic Creek. The format was better ball and, once again, the rain put an early end to proceedings. The winner, over the 9 holes possible, was the team of Kevin Dwyer and Peter Fitzpatrick closely pursued by the runners-up, Club Captain Mike Ford and the donor of the Trophy, Paul Frampton (clearly anxious not to part with his Trophy without a fight).
The end of May was marked by our trip to Pattaya that went ahead, sadly without the late Steve Ross who was the initiator. Nevertheless, the trip was hugely successful with the group enjoying good weather, three excellent golf courses and the usual cordial local reception. The winners were Paul Frampton at Bhurapa, Kevin Dwyer at Green Valley and Phil Simons at Phoenix .
The month was also marked by the creation of our new website, accessible at www.brgc.biz for which we must thank the prodigious efforts of our enthusiastic Webmaster, Kevin Dwyer. He has put a huge amount of work into the project and has patiently handled much well meaning but often less than technically sound advice! Do visit it and see how thoroughly professional it is.
