Hua Hin Hash House Harriers

Happy Birthday H2H3

Lucky 777! On July 7 of 2007, the Hua Hin Hash House Harriers celebrates run #100 and our 7th Birthday. Everyone is invited to join the fun of the run (or walk). Watch www.huahin-hhh.com for details. “If you have half a mind to join the hash, that is all you need.”

Run number 97, 26 May

It was set in the west side of hills reached by Chom Phol road, a kilometre past the Same Dam Place and past Don Juan Pond. The trail of shredded paper was recce'd and set by Ballbanger, Long Ron and Megabite.

An afternoon rainstorm arrived over the run site an hour before the Hash was to meet which might have kept some of our runners and walkers away but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of those who came and caused only minor damage to the trail of shredded paper. We were pleased to see the return of Mud Man after his families' trip to the UK and Daring Mary who had been on an adventure to India for months. It was also good to have Butt Out and Peaches back with us for the second time since their arrival in Thailand from the South Pacific island of Vanuatu .

The run began from the car park near a dairy farm and started off with a jog across a beam separating two irrigation ponds, home to diving ducks, catfish and noisy frogs. After the ponds the trail turned eastward and upward to enter green hills, which were brown hills just a month earlier. Thanks to almost daily rains, the ponds were full and babbling brooks ran here and there in the hills while babbling idiots also ran here and there in the hills in their attempt to follow the soggy shredded paper trail. Most of the trail was set along pathways made by cattle or by locals hunting and cutting bamboo, but some of the trail also followed rocky creek beds and slippery boulders. The entire trail was damp from the afternoon rain and parts of it were ankle deep mud from a month of the daily afternoon rains. Mud Man established the lead from the beginning of the run and stayed in the lead until nearly the end when he found Ballbanger and Hollow Legs ahead of him after they had taken a shortcut. Sparky was hot on the heels of Mud Man and 69 Forever was always in sight of Sparky. Richard and Da were in the front somewhere behind the leaders and never lagged behind very far even though they are more at home on bicycle seats and Bangkok streets. Space Cowboy and Ming were somewhere in the midst of the pack as were Comes First, Butt Out and Peaches. Daring Mary and Dragon Tail were rear guard on the track most of the time until Daring Mary took a sudden fall on a slippery boulder and nearly took out her two front teeth. Slightly bruised and a little scratched on the knees, Daring Mary returned to the car park under escort from Dragon Tail and Ming. The hares, Long Ron and Megabite followed most of the pack to ensure no one got lost along the way and hare Ballbanger took a shortcut back to the car park to ensure he was not late for the beer. At the end of the run, all of the Hashers made it back to the car park none the worse for wear but with a thirst that would quickly see the cooler emptied of Leo, Sprite and water. After and hour of gossip, war stories, bullshit and just chewing the fat, Ballbanger held the circle and dragged most everyone into it for a down down for one reason or another or for no reason at all. After closing the circle, the Hash went to the Wild Wild West, a brand new bar and restaurant run by Dutch cowboy Ron Van Der Plas. At the Wild Wild West we had some really good food and absolutely excellent beer without getting into a gunfight, a fistfight or other fun and so we called it a night and the end of another great hash day. We then broke up and went our separate ways with many of us finding each other once again at the Chicken Coop in Cha Am, doing what, for hashers, comes naturally.

Run number 98

Slackbladder returned after a couple months in Hong Kong to hare run number 98 with Ballbanger on the 9th of June. The car park was in the area of the Hua Hin Shooting Range near the domain of the Golden Buddha. Slackbladder and Ballbanger began the trail near the entrance of the shooting range and ran it in a southerly direction past a series of ponds hugging the hills east of the Palm Hills Golf Course and Stamford International University . After coming out of the shade of the thick bamboo groves in the hills, the trail dropped down to the tarmac at the perimeter of the golf course and then turned north toward the university. Near the university gate, the trail turned to the west into the base of more hills and then wound around the campus for a winding trip back to the car park.

While the turnout for the Hash run was a bit light, we were delighted to see the return of some long lost Hashers including Slackbladder, Chatterbox, Table Breaker and MysTerry Man. We knew that the GM and his boss were in Hong Kong , and MysTerry Man had been out of commission due to knee injuries but were all surprised when Table Breaker claimed to have been away in Ratchaburi teaching English. We had all assumed that he had been locked away in a jail in Thailand or somewhere else and are happy that he is still eluding capture. Stitch in Time returned for another run with us from his home in the UK . He was a bit late arriving and had to run hard to catch up with the herd, which had a 10-minute head start, but he did catch up and managed to finish long ahead of earlier starters. We had with us for the first time, Ron Van Der Plas from the Wild Wild West, which is a new restaurant across Petchkasem from the Rama 6 camp just north of Hua Hin. A former marathoner, the European cowboy kept the lead most of the time with Long Ron hot on his heals.

69 Forever, Hollow Legs, Comes First, Sparky, Mama Chick, Dragon Tail, Iron Lady and Buzzard were on most of the trail until Ballbanger decided to shortcut through the parking lot of Stamford under the pretence that he needed to lead the way for Dragon Tail so she could be well positioned to take photos of the herd thundering out of the hills from behind the school.

In the end, all of the hashers made it back to the car park from the trail with the exception of Table Breaker who got lost along the way but managed to find his way back to the cooler without any problems.

At the end of the day, Slackbladder held the circle and initiated the requisite down downs for our virgins, returnees, visitors and thirsty others after which we capped the cooler and headed for Burger 2 along canal road for some good Thai food and excellent Thai beer.

Border-to-Border Challenge

None but the strong will survive but the challenge is open even to the weak. From the border of Burma to the border of Cambodia , the Hua Hin Hash House Harriers and the Hua Cha Hash Pedalers are sponsoring this cross Thailand challenge in late September. If you have a bike and can ride it for at least 20 kilometres, then you will be able to meet the rigors of the challenge. If you can walk or run 5 or 6 kilometres, you will be among the strong survivors. Check out the KobWeb, www.huahin-hhh.com. Call Slackbladder (Ray) 087-852 2565 or Ballbanger (Don) 085-088 7181 for info if you do not use a computer.

Hua Cha Hash Pedalers

The Hua Cha Hash Pedalers is really nothing more than a group of pushbike pedalers who get together once a month for a bike ride somewhere in the Hua Hin or Cha Am area. Mountain bikes are preferred as we are often in hills or on sandy tracks where skinny tires do not do well. Call Don, 085-088 7181 for info on next ride.

Karting Krazy!

Steve Zwarts is still holding second position with his total points in the Thai National Championship, but he is at a point now where you have to make a very expensive decision; are we Karting for fun, and doing it as the biggest hobby, or are we going to take everything very seriously and give Steve a chance to compete with the best racers in Thailand.

We decided to go for the second option, and that's why he now has a brand new Kart, a Birel Kart R31 2007 Model and CIK-FIA approved, which means he can race all over the world in it. It's a huge investment, but we are sure off his skills to be number 1 or 2 in Thailand , and if you want to stay at the top you can only do so by having the best material available. Steve tested different new Karts, but the Birel was the fastest and the one that he could handle the best. We are also looking for a sponsor now, because it's getting more and more expensive, the sponsor will have his name on Steve's Kart as well as his Kart suit, and the races are broadcast live throughout Asia , twice a month. So for a potential sponsor this is a good opportunity to get more exposure. Steve is training hard now for the fourth race, which will be held in the first week of July, and then we will also know if the investment we made was worth it.

Steve is now fully equipped, and now it's his skills that have to prove who will be the best. He cannot blame anything about his Kart anymore if he doesn't win a race; it's all about his own performance. Come on Steve!
