GOLF NEWS

Hua Hin Golf Society

We are in the early stages of planning another away trip. We intend to put together a package similar to last years family trip. The trip would be a three-day, 2 nights stay at Kanchanaburi. We intend to limit the trip to 36 golfers plus their spouses, and it will be on a first come, first serve basis. At this moment, our intended itinerary will be:
Monday 3rd September, we will play Royal Ratchaburi on the way to Kanchanaburi.
Tuesday 4th September, we will play Nichigo.
Wednesday 5th September, we will play Blue Sapphire, returning to Hua Hin on that day.
The registration list will be on the notice board at Berny’s Inn from 23rd July till Sunday 26th August. Further information will be made available as and when final arrangements are made.
See the notice board at Berny’s or the web site http://www.huahingolfsociety.com.

Fit for Golf

In this article the emphasis will be moved from strictly golf fitness to fitness for everyone. Everyone, that is, that is physically able to perform the exercises without bringing on pain and discomfort. If you are not sure of your capabilities then seek out guidance from fit-foregolf to make sure you are not going to cause a problem.
The following movements can be done with or without added weight. The weight depends on how much strength you have now. Start light and build up the resistance. To start with 2-4 kg should suffice. As with all the exercises prescribed the back should be in neutral and the belly button pulled lightly into the spine. This will give optimum movement and help protect the spine from injury.
For the first exercise, hold a weight in both hands in front of the body but bend the arms a little. Start with the knees bent and the weight between the knees. Lift the weight over the head and straighten the arms and legs. Don’t let the weight go too far over the head. Return to the start position by reversing the process. Make sure that the legs are working and not the back bending. The more the knees and hips bend the better but make sure that the movement is under control and always maintain your balance. Repeat 10-15 times. The idea of this exercise is to strengthen the legs and shoulders as well improving balance.
The next exercise starts with the weight in the left hand and positioned by the right knee. The knees are bent and of course the back is in neutral with the belly button pulled to the spine. Start with the body weight on the right side. Draw the hand across the body and stretch it out over the left shoulder as you move the body weight across to the left. Though the hand rises above shoulder height the arm is 45o in front of the body. This is to prevent too much extension at the shoulder joint. Bring the hand back to the original position by reversing the movement. Always keep the hand close to the body to help maintain posture and take some strain off of the shoulders. This exercise will strengthen the legs, shoulders and back while maintaining a good range of movement through the hips.
There are many exercises like this to improve your golf and your overall physical fitness. To learn more contact Terry at www.fit-foregolf.com or call 081-009 6588

Fit Fore Golf

The Mike Ford Golf Admin Clinic

Continuing from last month, we are now on the 2nd tee.  Player A hits his shot towards a water hazard, and player B puts his ball in a bunker.  If it was certain or there was reasonable evidence (rule 26-1) that player A’s ball was in the hazard, he would have 2 options (Rule 26-1a & b), play another ball from the place where the original ball was played, or drop a ball “BEHIND THE WATER” keeping the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard directly in line with the ball and the hole, there is no limit to how far back he may go.  Those 2 options are for Water Hazard (Yellow Stakes), and for a Lateral Water Hazard (Red Stakes)

Rule 26-1c gives an additional option, that is to drop a ball 2 club lengths and not nearer the hole from the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, you also have the choice of dropping on the opposite margin if there is one but you must drop equidistant from the hole.  Why have Water and Lateral Water Hazards, why not just one? Well the answer to that is in some cases it is impossible to go “behind the water” and maintain the line of direction to the hole, thus we have Lateral Water Hazard.

B’s ball is in a bunker, and unfortunately there are a number of items in the bunker with and near the ball.  The ball is lying against a coconut; there is also a coke can, a cigarette packet, a grass divot from a previous shot, a small branch, and some stones.  The question is what can be removed and what has to remain.  The easiest way is to break each item down to either loose impediments or obstructions.  Obstructions may be removed, loose impediments have to remain.  An obstruction is anything artificial (coke can and cigarette packet) the remainder are all loose impediments (natural objects); look at the definitions of each in the rules book, it will help.  Local rules sometimes allow stones to be removed, again make sure you know the local rules.  Now time for B to play, unfortunately the ball is lying alongside the coconut and it is impossible for him to play the ball.  He can either try a stroke and hope, or take relief under penalty  “Ball Unplayable” (rule 28) if he does he has 3 options (rule 28a, b or c); a, play the ball as near as possible from where the original ball was played, b, drop a ball behind the point where the ball lays or c, drop a ball 2 club lengths from the ball not nearer the hole, in this case, because the ball is in the bunker, for options b and c the ball must be dropped in the bunker. And the penalty in all cases is 1 shot.

Hole completed, on to the 3rd Tee. Both hit good drives, and second shots are just short of the green, and in a line for the pin. A’s ball is further away than B’s, and B’s ball interferes with his line, so he asks B to lift his ball.(Rule 22-2) B marks his ball lifts it and puts it into his pocket.  Bad move, as this is one of the few occasions where a lifted ball CANNOT be cleaned (Rule 22-2) It could be considered that the ball travelling through the pocket material is cleaning the ball, my tip either hold the ball between your finger an thumb on view, or lay it on the ground away from the play.  By the way the other occasions a lifted ball cannot be cleaned are to determine fitness of the ball and for identification purposes.

A chips onto the green and marks his ball.  B decides to putt and sees some sand on the fringe on the line of his ball so he removes the sand.  Sorry, 2 shot penalty (Rule 13-2), sand and loose soil are only loose impediments on the green, see definition loose impediment.  Next month we will continue on the 4th Tee.

Asian Tour Coming to Black Mountain

Black Mountain Golf Club, Hua Hin’s newest golf course, will be the host venue for a major professional golf tournament on the Asian Tour. The event will be played on 20th until 23rd of March 2008, and will feature the best of the Asian golfers, including the top Thai professionals, who are sure to figure in the battle for the top prize.  Amongst the favourites will be Simon Yates, long time resident of Hua Hin and also attached to Black Mountain Golf Club. There will be live television coverage of the event, going out to many parts of the world, which will be a great opportunity for Hua Hin and Thailand to showcase itself as a great golfing destination.
This will also be a great opportunity for the many expat residents of Hua Hin, to see at first hand, the high quality of the fast growing Asian Tour and to see some future world stars.
Black Mountain Golf Club will prove to be a testing venue, with the addition of some tournament tees and testing rough, to make sure that there is a high premium on hitting the fairways from the tees.  The golf course will be a spectacular test, with the stunning views, red grass and the steep hills surrounding part of the course.

Butterfly Rock Golf

Another enjoyable (but still damp) month also brought some surprising results from closely fought fixtures. The Club also made its first visit to Black Mountain Golf Club and the general feeling was that it is a hugely impressive addition to the local golf scene. We will be returning on several occasions in the near future.
The principal competition was for the Rhino Trophy donated by the late Steve Ross and competed for by a strong field. The format was “Bogey” (never the easiest) and despite the efforts of Peter Fitzpatrick (2 up), Mike Lord (2 up) and Derek Lindsay (1 up), the clear winner at 6 up was Klaus Kristensen who briefly enjoyed a handicap of 28. In continuance of a thoroughly laudable trend, most of the winning prize was immediately donated to the Club’s support of local beer suppliers.
The Club Championship will be played over two days later this month. Both will be medal competitions at Lake View on the 22nd and at Palm Hills on the 29th.
The Club has arranged a visit to Nichigo Golf Club at Kanchanaburi in October. Leaving on the 15th October, the plan is to play later that day, the next day, have a day free for sightseeing (or practice for the dedicated) and play again on the Thursday. This will allow us to play a combination of all three nines. Please ensure early bookings with the committee. Non-golfers are, of course, very welcome.
Details of all competitions, results and general Club information can be viewed on our website at www.brgc.biz
