Fit for Golf
A lot is made of the need to improve and maintain flexibility to help play better golf. The joints and muscles should be stretched to give greater range of movement that will make it easier to swing the club. How true is this? When embarking on a stretching programme one thing is important at the start. Only stretch the muscles that need stretching. If all the areas are put through flexibility training, the body will not be able to align itself and still be out of balance. How can the areas in need of attention be highlighted so their ranges may be improved?
Here are two simple tests that will show if the back is rotating enough and the neck is too stiff. For the back test lie on the floor on your back with your knees at a 90° bend. Place the arms out to the side at shoulder height. Drop the knees to one side while keeping the shoulders on the ground. As the knees move to the side make sure the feet stay together, this will get the hip to lift off of the ground. Let the knees go as far as they can until the shoulder or arm moves. If the knees get to the ground without anything else moving your flexibility is good and stretches to the back should only be for maintaining the range of movement. As the body is designed to move to both sides then turn the knees left and right.
A neck that is restricted in movement can harm your swing, and even your health. Two tests are used to show the range of rotation and side bending. Simply turn the head to one side. Make sure the chin doesn’t lift or drop. The nose should be pointing forward. When the range of movement is at an end, the middle of the chin should be over the collarbone or beyond it. If not some flexibility training is recommended. To check lateral flexion, side bending, of the neck drop the ear towards the shoulder. There should be between 25° and 40° of bend in the neck, anything less should be dealt with. If one side has full motion but the other hasn’t then only work on the tight side.
These are just two tests used to evaluate the body and determine where it needs to be stretched. For the correct stretches get in touch with fit-foregolf.

The Mike Ford Golf Admin Clinic
We are now on the 5th tee, a par 5, both players have hit somewhat loose drives. Player A has gone towards the Out of Bounds left and Player B towards the woods right. Player A decides to play a provisional ball. So what is a provisional ball, and when, and from where can it be played?
‘Definitions’ tells us that it is a ball played under rule 27-2 for a ball that may be lost (outside of a water hazard) or maybe out of bounds.
A provisional ball may be played at anytime in accordance with rule 27-2, and must be played from place where the original ball was played, and before you walk forward from that position, therefore you cannot leave the tee, then go back and decide to play a provisional ball.
The procedure is, firstly to inform your marker or opponent your intention to play a provisional ball, (if you do not the ball played, becomes the ball in play). It is advisable for identification purposes to inform the make and number of the ball and any markings on the ball, and where possible it should not be similar to the original ball, and finally you must play the ball before you leave the tee, or the original position on the fairway. For information as to when the provisional ball becomes the ball in play or provisional ball is abandoned see (Rules 27-2b and 27-2c).
When player A arrives at the area where he hopes to find his ball, he is informed it is Out of Bounds and shown a ball which he identifies as his. The provisional ball now becomes the ball in play, under stroke and distance penalty, and he is now playing his 4th shot.
Player B searches in the wood for his ball, but unfortunately after the allowed time of 5 minutes he is unable to find his ball, it therefore becomes a lost ball (see definition ‘lost ball’), the reason I ask you to look at this definition is that a ball can only be lost, you cannot declare it lost, he goes to his provisional ball to play his 4th stroke.
There is great value in playing a provisional ball, especially in medal/strokeplay events; firstly it speeds up play, eliminating going back to the tee, and secondly it gives you an idea of the distance to start searching.
Continuing play, both 4th shots finish in the woods, player A’s ball is close to a large tree, B’s is sitting on several twigs. In the process of playing the ball, A hits the tree with his iron and breaks the shaft. He enquires if he is allowed to replace the iron. (Rule 4) tells us that if a club is broken or damaged during the normal course of play, the player may continue playing with it, or replace the club (Rule4-3a). If it had been broken or damaged other than in the normal course of play, it cannot be replaced, and if the damage makes it non-conforming it cannot be used either (Rule 4-3b). Remedy do not hit clubs on the ground, against trees or throw them in anger.
There is however one case when a club, broken or damaged outside the normal course of play can be replaced, that is if you commence the round with less than 14 clubs, the rules allow you to add clubs at anytime up to a limit of 14. Player A decides to play on without replacing his broken club.
In an attempt to clear the area at the back of the ball B tries to remove some of the small twigs his ball is sitting on. Unfortunately in the process the ball moves (Rule 18-2a1) the penalty for this is 1 stroke, and the ball must be replaced.
So what if the ball is not replaced? Rule 18 (Penalty for breach of Rule) tells us that the general penalty is, Matchplay – loss of hole, Strokeplay – 2 shots but there is no additional penalty (e.g. the 1 shot for ball moved.)
Therefore if the ball moves and is replaced (1 shot), if the ball moves and is not replaced (2 shots).
Both players play out the hole and continue playing; they arrive and complete the front 9 holes without incident.
Next month we start to play the back 9.

This past month saw the first Club Championship played over 36 holes at Lake View on the 22nd August and Palm Hills on the 29th August. Both venues attracted strong fields and the event was closely contested. After the lead in both divisions changed hands on numerous occasions, the eventual overall winners of the Championship for 2007 were Bob Welsh (80+81=161) in the Scratch Division and John Anstee (net 70+73=143) in the Handicap Division. Congratulations to the winners and also to Bill Henderson, Paul Williams, Karri-Matte Manniko and Peter Dunne who pushed Bob all the way in the Scratch and to Tony Hallam who pursued John in the Handicap. Bob Welsh could have won both trophies but for John’s late efforts. The trophies were presented by Peter Dunne who had most generously donated them.
The Matchplay competition is now well under way and will go on through the next few months. There have been the usual number of surprises and the competition is set to give us an exciting finish. Please arrange to play your matches as early as possible.
On a personal note, September also introduced the writer to his first experience of the “Collapsing Caddy Syndrome”which was not wholly enjoyable as it turned out. Watching one’s caddy plummet to the floor is bad enough but the unusual methods of resuscitation practiced by her colleagues was even more worrying. Fanning with her own hat was acompanied by determined attempts to insert some foul smelling plastic tube up her nose. Nevertheless, all was safely supervised by our playing partner and part-time medic, Peter Fitzpatrick, who resorted (hopefully with the best interests of the patient in mind) to loosening her clothing! This had a most remarkable galvanizing effect and she fled the course in a buggy within moments. The delay unfortunately meant that our group could only reach the 17th before a thunderstorm hit and flooded us all. The lesson, I think, must be that we should all be aware of the possibility that the experienced caddy who looks up at the sky, sniffs the air and promptly “corpses” at your feet could know a thing or two more than us about the weather prospects – perhaps we should all leave with her?
Our usual Wednesday competitions, Monday and Friday roll-ups have been augmented by a further small group at Lake View each Friday. Please check tee times with David Rawlings.
Finally, the trip to Nichigo is still open for any members who would like to take part. Please contact Phil Simons to book your place. It promises to be a very good few days at a delightful Golf course.
