HHGS CHARITY CHRISTMAS GOLF DAY & GALA DINNER

On the 18th of December the Hua Hin Golf Society held it’s annual fun and fund raising event. Over the years the Society has raised hundreds of thousands of Baht for worthy causes and this year was another record breaking tally (see main Golf society report). A brilliant effort by all concerned particularly Robert Baker, whose gentle persuasion prises donations from local businesses and generous individuals. Past projects which have been supported from the Charity Fund include: A special needs school in Petchaburi, Walai School, Nong Plub, Hua Hin, who were supplied with mosquito netting, ceiling fans, plastic mats and a megaphone; the charity also
built a toilet block for the kindergarten children. TV’s and a computer with printer
have also been given. At Kaopitak School, Hua Hin. a water tank was installed for
the children to wash with and use in the toilets. Bangwangboad School, (Pala U
Road, Hua Hin was given insect screens, fans, floor covering, redecorated classrooms
additional lunch time food. They have now build a “canteen” using charity funds. Three years ago a Tsunami Disaster fund was given 150,000 Baht towards the rebuilding of school property in the Phuket area. La Moh School, was supplied with a tiled floor, new wall tiles and toilets, cabinets, fans and uniforms for the 86 students. Recent projects include an orphanage in Pranburi, Mercy House, Khao Noi, Pranburi. Financial support to the tune of 370,000 baht to build an outbuilding which is used in training the children in bakery, handicraft, hi-fi, sewing and computer skills. A single parent, who unfortunately lost her fight against cancer on 21st February 2007 and who hadn’t been able to work since November 2006, who had 3 school age children to support, was donated 20,000 baht towards her expenses. 2007 projects included Baan Nong Kam School: who was supplied funds for a toilet block, furnished a nursing room, ceiling fans and also some computer equipment. Toohgkhan School: received funds for a toilet shelves for books, ceiling fans and also some computer equipment. Baan Pong Yai School: Had funds for atoilet block, was supplied with ceiling fans and also some mosquito netting. Pu-Wai School: was given some ceiling fans.Walai School: Received funds for a water tank. Petchaburi Adult Mental Care Home: have been provide with clothing, sanitary wear, underwear, shoes and some storage cases. Once again well done to all those who have supported the sterling efforts of the Hua Hin Golf Society Charity Fund.

Fit for Golf

Fit-foregolf would like to wish everyone a prosperous New Year and a lower handicap to all you golfers. It is the time for resolutions and this year would be a great chance to commit to improving fitness and general well-being. Some of the benefits of exercise are improved mobility, increased strength and better concentration. The areas golfers look for to improve their game. But be careful, if you haven’t exercised for a while then take it easy when starting again. There is no need to overdo the amount undertaken. 20 to 30 minutes a session and 3 sessions a week will make a huge difference to the way you look and feel. For those of you who are lucky enough to have a gym at your disposal the range of exercises that can be performed is almost endless. Don’t fret if there is no purpose built equipment around. Any lifting and carrying will get the body working and increase fitness and strength. Again make
sure that the amount of exercise is not too much. The last thing that should happen
is for an injury to occur as this will put you back to square one. It is difficult to advise
here on which exercise is good for each person. The best way to find out is to
contact Fit-foregolf and get a personalized programme arranged. The most important part of all this is a good diet. If you put in bad fuel then you can’t expect good performance. Look at the things you eat and cut down on the amount of fat in the food. The hardest part is eating the right things. Juggle with the different foods until you find what suits you best. For example, too much bread or meat may be bad for you. If the weight won’t shift and you are eating healthily then drop something, say red meat, out of your meals for a week or two and see if it makes a difference. It may be some other food stuff that needs to be discarded so be prepared to take a few weeks to find the right balance. In the long-run it’s worth it. Only when the diet and the amount of exercise is right will the results begin to arrive. The body takes a while to adjust to any change in daily activity so a few aches and pains may be experienced initially. They will cease as the strength increases. Stick with it and the results will justify the effort put in. To start 2008 with a healthy attitude call fit-foregolf on 081-009 6588 or visit www.fit-foregolf.com

Butterfly Rock Golf Club

Congratulations are once again due to our premier golfer, Paul Williams who has
deservedly won our Order of Merit. This competition has run throughout the year
and is based on all qualifying competitions with points awarded on a weekly basis.
Paul needed to win the last competition held at Black Mountain on the 15th
November to take the Title and he duly “produced the goods” again, shooting a
gross 76 giving him a net 72. This was good enough to earn him the 6 points he
needed to overtake the leaders. Second place was taken by Doug Miller with near
namesake, Craig Miller securing third spot. A new competition with a slightly altered
format will commence in the New Year. The J & B Putter Matchplay competition
reached it’s climax in December with Bill Henderson narrowly beating our own
“Steady Eddie”, Phil Simons, in the final to take the major prize. Both have played very well throughout the competition and it was Bill who defeated our reigning champion ,Sven Wermelin on his way to the final. The Plate Round (for first round losers) was won by Don Bayley who beat Paul Frampton on the first extra hole after a
tense battle. Our congratulations to Bill and Don on their success. November ended with two fun competitions. The first was for the Alan Mercer Trophy donated by Alan and, at his request, played in a two-ball scramble format. Selection was made randomly between two groups of golfers, one with lower and the other with higher handicaps. It resulted in a most enjoyable and closely fought contest with the team of Bryan McLeod and Tim Holland (net 56.5) getting in ahead of Paul Williams and Barbara Anstee (net 57.3) and Stuart Hobbs and Tony Hallam (net 58). Apart from the impressive Trophy, Alan also produced many other prizes and mention should be
made of Barbara Anstee (again) who took two of them for getting nearest to the
pin on a couple of par threes. The wine flowed freely. The Club also made a rare
visit to the Dhanarat course in Pranburi for a three-ball (two best scores to count)competition. The results had a familiar ring with the “dream team” of Bryan McLeod, Paul Williams and Stuart Hobbs triumphant again. Back to more serious stuff on the 5th December with a bogey competition at Lake View. This was very close as might be expected with this format and ended with three players on 1 up. A count back led to a win by Bryan “the Burglar” McLeod with Paul Williams second and Mike Ford third. It will be of interest to (both) followers of this monthly report to learn that after rigorous enquiry the ostensibly odd behaviour of our Treasurer, Paul Frampton, in purchasing new clubs rather than beer for his fellow sufferers has an acceptable explanation. It would seem that, after amassing his points on the Desert course at Lake View, he suffered from heat stroke and lost the plot! This unlikely defence was accepted by the inquisitors after Paul had bought them several drinks and the matter is now closed. Finally, it only remains to wish our Club Members, guests and all involved with our activities a very Happy Golfing New Year.

LIVE AT BLACK MOUNTAIN - GÖRAN FRISTORP

The story goes that Swedish folk legend Göran Fristorp was so shy at the beginning of his career that he closed his eyes throughout a performance. Three decades and 21 records later, he has learned to cope with his natural shyness and the reason for closing his eyes is simply an act of concentration. Göran is one of the few musicians in the world today playing complicated guitar accompaniment and singing at the same time. Those 30 years kicked off with his first electric guitar wired up to his home stereo, to being the Swedish representative in the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta,
together with his friend Clabbe; he is now considered the most accurate purveyor
of Swedish folk music composed by such diverse legends as Evert Taube, Nils Ferlin,
Carl Mikael Bellman, Gustaf Fröding and Beppe Wolgers. When he plays his guitar,
time stands still, the tones he delivers are so delicate and touching that no other
sound seems to matter. His voice has gained depth over the years but Göran can still hit the high notes demanded in the Swedish folk music tradition. Many ballad singers are called upon, but very few are chosen – Göran is certainly the chosen one when it comes tokeeping the Swedish folk tradition alive. He is constantly on tour around Sweden and Norway and has been filling all the empty churches in Sweden for many years with his trademark perfectionist performances. Sometimes he regrets turning down an offer from Herb Alpert to move to the USA as his personal songwriter, but had he accepted, he could hardly have risen to his latest challenge of bringing Swedish folk music to Asia. Without a doubt he is the best person to give us all a lesson in the power and timelessness of the ballad, and as the generous soul he is, no question will go unanswered. For time being he is in the studio recording an album with material written all by himself, both music and lyrics. A duet with one of Sweden’s new rising star Helene Sjöholm will be one of the highlights. We are all looking forward to the new album. The latest Fullständigt was only sold and distributed in Norway but after a big interest from record companies in Sweden we can rest assure that the new album will be released in Sweden as well. Göran Fristorp  is setting a high standard; he is extremely self conscious about his ability and leaves no efforts behind when it comes to fine tuning his performances. Every single concert is approached in the same professional way. “People in the audience who pay to come and listen to me deserve my full attention and commitment to deliver at the best of my ability”, says Göran. We will get the chance to hear Göran live in Hua Hin. He will perform at Black Mountain’s beautiful restaurant Sunday 20th January. The dinner concert starting with a cocktail at 7pm. Ticket 1500 Baht. Call 032 618666 or 08 90283547 or email: restaurant@bmghuahin.com for reservation.

MIKE FORD GOLF CLINIC

We have now moved to the 11th hole and both players have teed off and are
in the fairway. Player A is in an area of very rough ground, which is marked by a white line, this is known as ground under repair (GUR). Now it is the responsibility
of the committee to designate areas of the course that are ground under repair, and mark them. It is usual to mark the whole area concerned with a white line, occasionally a marker board stating GUR is inserted into the ground, but even so the
whole area should be marked by a white line. Unfortunately in Thailand this never
seems to happen. The question is, what can you do about it if it is not marked?
Unfortunately there is nothing in the rules related to unmarked areas of rough ground,
they call it rub of the green, you really have no option but to play the ball as it lies.
So lets get back to GUR. What can you do as a player if you are in such an
area? Firstly unless it is marked as “play restricted” you may play your ball from
the GUR if you wish to. You may have a good lie and line so that could be the
correct decision. If it is designated “Play restricted”, then you must take relief from
the GUR. If you take relief, then that relief must be “full relief” and you should drop
the ball, not nearer the hole, at the nearest point of relief, in a position that enables
you to take a stance outside the GUR. You cannot stand within the GUR and play the
ball. There are other situations that constitute GUR, for example, if the green staff are
sawing up a fallen tree and stacking it for removal, that area is consider GUR. If
grass cuttings have been piled for removal, they are GUR. I suggest you take time to
read the definition of Ground Under Repair, and Rule 25. Player B’s ball has come to rest under a fallen tree. What B can do depends on whether the fallen tree is still attached to its roots, or whether it is severed from its roots. If the tree is severed from its roots, it is classed as a loose impediment, (see definition) as we established earlier in these articles, loose impediments can be removed except in a hazard, so B can remove the fallen tree. Perhaps it is too large and heavy to be remove by himself, can he get assistance? Definition 23-1/3 tells us that yes he can, as long as it does not unduly delay play. So the last question is, what if he and any helpers cannot move the tree. Answer, he must play the ball as it lies or deem it unplayable and take the necessary penalty. If the tree was still attached to its roots, it has the status of any other tree, and B would have to play the ball as it lies or take a penalty relief.
This brings us to a question as to what B could do if he was not sure how to
proceed. Rule 3-3 tells us that if a competitor has doubt as to procedure, he may play 2 balls, report such to his marker, who will record the score with both balls, and the player must report to the committee for a decision before returning his scorecard. This rule can be used at anytime when there is doubt as to the procedure. But beware it is only allowed in stroke play, see definition 3-3/9 (Second ball played in Match Play).
On completion of the hole, B decided to practice chipping and putting on the green
of the hole they had just played, Player A questioned if this was allowed. Rule 7,
tells us all we need to know about practice, before, during, and between rounds. In this case it tells us that practice putting and chipping is allowed on the green just played as long as it does not unduly delay play (Rule 7-2). Rule 7-1 tells us that
on the day of a Match play Competition players may practice on the course to be
played, but on the day of a Stroke play Competition, they may not; additionally you
cannot practice between rounds on any course that is to be played as part of 2 or
more rounds, Stroke Play competition. Rule 7 and decision for Rule 7 is interesting reading with many other cases, e.g. practicing on the 8th hole of a 9-hole
course in an 18-hole competition; have a look you could be surprised.
