Fit for Golf
Though timing has to be right when hitting the ball, power is also important. As golf is an excessively dynamic sport the amount of control needed to keep the body aligned when performing the swing is substantial. As previously covered in these articles flexibility and balance are essential to maintain a strong posture. The exercises prescribed for improvement of flexibility andbalance are mostly carried out on the floor. Golf is not played lying on the floor though that is where some rounds may leave you! To prepare the body for the force it will have to control specific power work is recommended. For the following exercises a weight of 2 kg will cover the resistance
needed. There is a lot of force going through the shoulder as you make the swing. To keep the rotator muscles strong and prevent injury hold the 2 kg weight and bend the
elbow to 90o with the top part of the arm tight against the side of the torso. Here you will need something or someone to catch the weight. The hand is to move across the body for the first exercise and away from the body for the second. When the hand has gone as far as it can then let go of the weight. The elbow is still at the side. This is where you will need a net or one movement is weaker than another go back and perform another set on the weak range of movement. Each repetition should be repeated 10 times and you can do two sets. The next exercise is called reverse wood chop. The name should give you an idea of the movement. Just imagine you are bringing an axe up ready to chop wood. Start with the weight by a knee, the knees are bent slightly, and then lift the weight up and over the opposite shoulder. Return it to the knee and repeat 10 times. Work the left and right sides. Try to perform three sets. As with all exercises remember to keep the belly button pulled into the spine and the back straight. Always work in a pain free range and stop if it is getting hard to maintain a good posture. For improvement in the power of your golf swing call Terry on 081-0096588 or hit the website www.fit-foregolf.com

Butterfly Rock Golf Club
We are now well into the New Year, and Hua Hin is getting busy on the golf courses. It
is a time to be patient, most courses have booking systems, but they seldom work, so it is very much hit and miss in achieving the tee time you have booked. Added to this we have those visitors who never bother to book, so go looking for any tee that is not occupied. Fortunately the BRGC book well in advance and to date have experienced little problem, except for one Monday when they unfortunately teed off behind “Greencard” an organization that visits Hua Hin annually, and for reasons best known to them find
it impossible to complete a round of golf in under 5 to 51/2 hours. Consequently we gave in at the 13th and headed for the clubhouse. Our major event in December was our Christmas Party, held at Sailom Hotel. This is the second year we have been to Sailom, and I am sure we will be returning in 2008. Many thanks to Sonchai Siangwong the catering manager for his help in making the arrangements, and dealing with the food and
punch. The main organizers were Mike Ford (Captain) and Paul Frampton (Sec/Tres). On arrival each member and guest were greeted with a glass of alcoholic or nonalcoholic punch, and then guided to their table. The meal consisted of traditional turkey with all the trimmings, Sea Food BBQ, and a variety of Thai dishes, On completion of the meal, the Captain gave his very short speech, and we then proceeded to present the 11 trophies played for during the year (see photo). Many thanks to those members who donated the trophies. Apart from receiving the trophy, each winner was presented with a winner’s plaque for them to keep. The evening completed with dancing to our local group, with the occasional member artiste. Howard gave us some rendering of I think Frank Sinatra,
Rod gave us a couple of songs and Nid, who in her past was a singer sang us some Thai songs. A lovely evening enjoyed by all and hopefully to be repeated in 2008. Our weekly roll ups are still well attended and the weekly competition also. For those wives and partners who wonder why we get home so late, it seems to be due to the purchasing of beer by the winners, it has become a very good habit, and long may it continue.

The mantra at Profound Putters is “Hide the Orange”.
I wasn’t sure what Christopher Longbottom, (Profound’s Hua Hin agent) meant... until I picked up one of the putters.
The putter’s alignment uses two white lines, that are the top of a 3-D alignment method they call “3Dinsight” The inside of the ‘hoops’ that make the white lines are orange. If your heel or toe is in the air, you’ll see orange. This is what keeps the putter’s moment of inertia in the right place, and ensures that you’ll at least be striking the ball correctly. Whether or not you’ve read the green correctly is another story. Here is how Chris further explained the optical concept to me. “When you see no orange with a correctly fitted lie angle, your eyes will always be over the center of the clubhead and over the ball, a unique visual alignment indication at all times. The putter then communicates your perfect set up or not through the whole round. It is actually the same indication as you get when practicing with a mirror on a level surface, then you get eyes over ball indication.
With our putters you get that same indication at all times, which helps you repeat your perfect set up position and aim. To be able to get the ball rolling over that exact spot you chose as intermediate target, then you cannot have a skew view and aim, you need to be over the plane made up by ball center and target line. This is what Profound Putters call Eyes on plane for true aim, and their unique alignment system gets it right every time by that simple mantra - hide the orange - can it get any simpler than that?” This putter has a steel head that’s cast, and then face milled. The 375g head feels solid. When comparing it to other putters in it’s price-range, I think the craftsmanship is spot-on. I don’t see this as a collector’s item...it’s a putter that is meant to be played, or even used as a training aid. The head cover has to be one of the best on the market. We’ve seen bad ones in the past. You can tell that the designers at Pro-Found really took their time with this one. It is very solid, thickly lined, and the strong magnets keep it locked into place when it’s banging around in your bag. The Grip: Profound Putters uses a Feeltec V3 Classic Paddle seamless design grip. It is very similar to the Winn AVS, but feels like it wouldn’t wear out as easily. The grip feels good on hot sweaty Hua Hin days. I’m not a fan of skinny grips, and this one seemed to be nice and thick, without being overly squishy. Great grip in my opinion. The founder of Profound Putters, Bernt Stellander inventor and designer, a Norwegian born in Graz, Austria, grew up in northern part of Norway, Tromsø, above theArctic Circle, where the world’s northernmost golf course is located. He played semi-professional soccer when he was injured in a game in 1996 and had to retire from his soccer career. A few years later, in the summer of the year 2000 he was introduced to the game of golf for the very first time, and was immediately hooked. He especially found a passion for putters and putting, the important game within the game. His background of studies in optometry and his passion for geometry and design made him start to think about putters, and the importance of aiming and aligning. So he started developing a totally new approach to club head design with focus on both visual aspects and physical properties of putters. Great alignment and forgiveness are top priorities for Mr. Stellander. After less than two years in the game, a brand new alignment system with many visual options was invented. Utility and design patent applications were registered
at the US Patent Office. His ultimate dream is to follow in the footsteps of another famous Norwegian, the late and great Mr. Karsten Solheim. (Ping if you didn’t know)
The day I first hit the putter was not a fair test as I had not taken the chance to practice beforehand. First green, massive 30 footer down hill with a break to the left, the ball rolled straight in, my God what have I got in my hand? Mixed results followed with the usual sprinkling of 3 putts. I found I was spending too much time “hiding the orange” and not enough lining up the hole! After a very encouraging practice at Palm Hills hitting 3,6 9 and 12 foot putts, I put the putter to the test again, this time with the Hua Hin Golf Society – 31 putts at Royal Ratchaburi on greens I don’t know at all was not a bad showing. Bearing in mind I have had to completely change grip, stance, and set up from my old putter I have to say the Profound putter feels so good that it will be worth persevering with and one day soon I hope to report a round with only 26 putts!
YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A “HIDE THE ORANGE” PUTTER
Christopher Longbottom has very generously offered one of his putters to an Observer reader. All you need to do is send in a humourous golfing tale, the editorial staff will pick out the best ones, which will be published and the winner will be presented with this fabulous putter. Please email your story (in English) to design@observergroup.net before the 15th of February. We are quite happy to judge “off colour” entries, but as the winner will be published in our family magazine it will need to be free of profanities! 31
