Fit for Golf

Fit For Golf Having good balance while hitting a golf shot is paramount to a successful outcome. If the body can’t stay in position then the clubface could be at any angle when it strikes the ball. As most of us know it will mean more intrepid journeys into the undergrowth. Strengthening the body while performing dynamic movements promotes better stability and more control over each shot. The following exercises are best performed with a Tornado ball. But as there doesn’t seem to be any in Thailand then a tennis ball, or something of a similar size, in a shopping bag will suffice. You need a wall to stand with your back to and enough space to swing the ball out in front. Step about 1 metre away from
the wall holding the bag with both hands. The bag must be quite strong, maybe put two or three together, as if it splits the ball will end up in the next county! Position the body with a neutral spine and draw the belly button into the spine. Bend the knees slightly and keep the shoulders from lifting. Swing the ball to one side and as it bounces off the wall swing it to the other side. Use the whole body when changing sides. The hips and shoulders should move at the same time. Aim to hit the wall twenty times each side. If you want to carry on for more then so be it. Now change the range of movement and start with the ball striking the wall level with the knee and over the opposite shoulder. This diagonal motion is more like a golf swing. Make sure the back stays in neutral and the legs are slightly bent. As the last exercise repeat each side twenty times or until the arms are tired. It is very important that the movement is controlled. Don’t try to swing too fast. Start slow and increase the pace. As mentioned

before, always keep the back strong by engaging the inner abdominal muscles. If you are getting out of breath or feel any discomfort then stop immediately. It is advisable to first strengthen the core muscles before embarking on this type of programme. In that case see the earlier fitforegolf articles for improved muscle tone. These exercises and many others can be experienced easily by contacting www.fit-foregolf.com or calling Terry on 081-009 6588

Fit Fore Golf

Butterfly Rock Golf Club

The past month has been one of much change. Firstly Vice Captain David had an offer that meant a move, and consequently resigned his position. This left us with a problem as the time limit for AGM proposal submission had passed and we now had no natural successor to Mike Ford (Captain). This was made even more a problem because Mike had already informed the committee of his intention not to seek re-election as Captain or committee, and was not going to change that decision. This meant that the club had no proposals for either Captain or Vice Captain. At aninformal meeting of the remaining committee it was decided that in the interim period the club would run without either of the positions being filled. This meant that there were 2 positions that needed to be filled on the committee. The other change is that Kevin Dwyer will now be handicap secretary. The AGM was held at Sailom Hotel on Sunday 10th Feb with a fairly good
attendance. The Captain Mike gave his report for the past 2 years, the time that the club had been in existence. He summarized all that had happened during the initial 2 years and the progress made. In it he emphasized that there was a need for a natural progression on committee from member to Vice Captain to Captain in line with the  Club rules, and hoped that the new committee would address this problem. Paul Williams and Robin Heath were elected to the committee. After the official AGM completed an open forum was held where members asked many questions and hopefully got their replies. One major change this month is that the Monday roll up at Lake View has now been changed to a qualifying event. The event will still be run on similar lines, in high season members will have to log in by internet and the 4 balls will be drawn by computer, in low season it will be a matter of turning up 1 hour before tee off time and the 4 balls will be drawn at the golf club. We will still play skins, but each player must return a completed score card, consequently 1 player
in each group will keep an additional card for skins only. Instead of front 9, back 9 and overall, the winners will be 1 to 3 or 1 to 4depending on number of entries.
Thanks go to Kevin, who has had a beautiful trophy cabinet made and sited in Limelight, all our trophies are now displayed there, and this will be followed by honours boards for all our trophy events. BRGC Results

Putter competition Winner

Sven Ingermarson (tourist) Sven is from Sweden and has generously said that he wants to donate the putter to the Hua Hin Golf Society children charity. I was playing at Palm Hills and the day started like any other ordinary round of golf, until the third hole. After finishing up the hole I reached down to retrieve my ball from the cup when I heard a rip. The seam of my pants split wide open. This wasn’t so bad, besides the ribbing from my fellow players, (who I had only just met), about the need to diet. I thought I would finish the front nine and run in and change and that would be the end of it. WRONG.. I hit the next tee shot into the woods and proceeded to look for it. Just my luck the rip in my pants caught onto a branch and turned the rip into a tear. Now it was hard to conceal my predicament. The fabric was flapping in unison to the flag on the green. And what made matters worse was that we were playing in front of four young Thai women. The moral of the story is... if you rip your pants... hit it in the fairway. Runner Up – Peter Peter from the UK, who wishes his surname to be kept secret. Before my golfing holiday to Thailand I was in search of a new driver to cure my slice. No matter which top make driver I tried, I would still slice the ball dramatically. Well I found a website that had a “cure-all” slice stopping driver. I decided to purchase the components and build the club myself (saved a whopping 15 quid). At the range I absolutely crushed the ball and it was relatively straight! But none of my friends were there to see it. (They were all packing ready for our holiday). When I got home I called every one of them up to brag about the length of my drives and how I was no longer slicing the ball. I couldn’t wait to hit it on my first round at Springfield. After much grandstanding and hoopla (I’ll admit I was a prat about it!) I “unveiled” my self-built driver. I teed the ball up nice and high and after waiting for the green to clear (they are still laughing about that too), I swung that club as hard as I could and WHAM!.........the club head came clean off the shaft and ended up about 100 feet behind the first tee in a golf cart, narrowly missing another golfer! I think the Thai heat loosened the glue! If you listen very carefully you can still hear all of my friends and about 20 onlookers still laughing, and the golfer I almost hit is still cursing! P.S. I still slice like a maniac! 2nd runner up - David Keep A vicar, a doctor and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers ahead of them on the tee. The engineer fumed, “What’s wrong with this group ahead? We must have beenwaiting for 15 minutes!”

The vicar said, “Hey, here comes the greens keeper. Let’s have a word with him. “Hello George. What is wrong with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow aren’t they?” The green keeper replied, “Oh, yes, that’s a group of blind fire fighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play  for free anytime.” The group was silent for a moment. The vicar said, “That’s so sad I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight.” The doctor said, “Good idea. And I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist friend and see if there’s anything he can do for them.” The engineer said.
