Fit for Golf

Fit For Golf The strength of the legs is an area that is sometimes neglected when training for sport. In golf the stronger the legs the more sound base you have for
maintaining balance and generating power. Also if the muscles are toned then there is less likelihood of an injury. Golf is a multi-planer sport so it is no good just exercising the leg in one direction of movement. All the muscles in the leg and pelvic complex need to be worked. The following two exercises are designed to
bring in balance as well as strengthen all the leg muscles. The first exercise is fairly straightforward to follow. Stand with the feet hip width to shoulder width apart. Make sure the back is in neutral and the belly button is pulled lightly into the spine. Starting with either foot, first step forward, then 45º forward from the midline of the body. Next take the foot out to the side 90º from the front followed by back 45º from the midline. To complete the movement of the leg on that side, step back straight behind you. Swap to the other leg and start by stepping back, 45º behind, 90º to the side, 45º forward and lastly out in front. Repeat the cycle three or four times. To make the exercise harder hold some weights in your hands. 3-4 kg to start with but don’t go too heavy and sacrifice the way the exercise is performed. The other exercise is a bit more technical and takes a bit of concentration. Hold a weight in both hands in front of the body Keep the hands close to the torso to save too much pressure on the shoulders. The feet are  pointing to the front. Now turn the body to the right. Bring the feet to point to the right also. When you are facing 90º to the right of where you started let the  shoulder move round a little more and let the weight go down over the right leg. The knees should be bent but make sure the right knee isn’t forward of the right toes.  When you have comfortably gone as far as is possible then come back to the centre under control. Repeat the movement going to the other  side. Take your time with this movement and as before only go to an end range that is controllable. Also make sure the weight isn’t too heavy for you. Move to each side about 10 times. For more leg exercises speak to fitforegolf at 081-0096588 or through the website www.fit-foregolf.com

Fit Fore Golf

Butterfly Rock Golf Club

BUTTERFLY ROCK GOLF What a difference a week makes! Far from the expected 6 month sojourn in Chiang Mai, the nearly Captain, David Rawlings, returned within a few days and, like the prodigal son, was accepted back into the fold. The Committee has invited David to assume the captaincy left vacant by Mike Ford and he will have the support of Vice-Captain, Paul Williams for the coming year. There must also be a further acknowledgement of all the hard work undertaken by Mike Ford during his two years as Captain. He has, with the support of his Committee, left the Club in a very strong position for the future. The Club is now committed to two qualifying competitions each week with the Monday roll-up added to the existing Wednesday events. The format seems to be working well with our committed event organizers, Kevin and Phil, adding technology to the improvement of organization and recording. Not all the advances have been fully understood by the membership, giving some confusing
and some hilarious signing up glitches. Results for the past few weeks show afair spread of different event winners but some familiar names re-appear. Brian
the Burglar continues to star, playing solid, consistent golf, week in week out to the despair of his group of regular contributors. His ability is, however, matched by his post match generosity as he long ago realized that he was probably in possession of the only cash left round the table! Phil Simons has continued his steady improvement and is often among the winners these days and our ex-Captain has flourished freed from the burdens of  office. One new star, Gwynn Williams, has appeared on the leader board on several occasions and he has also emerged as an organizing force at all events – his assistance has been much appreciated. The writer has been made aware of one curious occurrence on a day spent in Pattaya by a number of our club mates. It seems that our much loved and now abstemious colleague “Aitch” failed to pass the Ladies Tee Box on five separate occasions in the same match! There was some talk of soft drink purchases but this cannot be verified. March saw Howard reach his 60th Birthday, an event celebrated at Limelight with Howard
obviously thrilled to have his sons around him for such an event. Kevin’s party arrangements were, as ever, efficient and very attractive! Not even he, however,
could blunt the enthusiasm or improvethe quality of the inevitable karaoke volunteers. As the “High Season” comes to an end, we look forward to a somewhat quieter time on our various courses. All Members should take careful note of the different tee-off times that are now available as we head into April. Please check in to the website regularly or ask a Committee Member. A Happy Songkran to you all.
