Hash Run #22 Saturday 18th May 2002 Hare: Tom
The Five Samurai Run
Film buffs might remember a film by the Japanese director Kurosawa called
"The Seven Samurai" about masterless Samurai who went around
the country performing good needs of some sort. Well we didn't have seven
but H2H3 run #22 was graced by five lovely Japanese hashers from Osaka
bent on doing good deeds, but more on that later.
Despite a rain shower early in the afternoon the skies had cleared when
our biggest pack to date of twenty-three, mostly visitor, but with one
new member hit the ON ON trail. The setting was the valley adjacent to
the Palm Hills Resort and new member Don (otherwise known as Ball Buster)
showed his vigor by leading the way to the first check and breaking it
quickly. In fact this new fellow put on an amazing show breaking all the
checks except two where May showed the way. The trail started on asphalt
along the perimeter of Palm Hills but quickly veered into the cow paths
and pineapple fields that we are used to. The trail led straight to the
hills (where many stopped to enjoy the view of Hua Hin and the bay by
the airport) but hare Tom, knowing the packs aversion to hills, veered
off to more gently terrain, by passing a temple and then into an open
field (some discussion of what had been harvested here with May suggesting
some type of alovera plant???) . In any case open field and fast running.
Then some dirt roads and, at last the Back Check that Tom is known for.
This brought the strung out pack back together, with even the walkers
catching up. Then back to dirt roads, back down to the canal, another
back check, and then a loooong run in along the canal. Fast run, 45 minutes
for the front runner and new member Don with May coming next and first
for the ladies. All the pack came in within five minutes. Great run in
a nice setting.
But of course the run is only part of the program and now to our visitors
and most importantly the girls from Osaka because they are the important
one. After a few beers and gentle discussion comes time for the circle.
In come the five visiting ladies from the Osaka hash, all giggles and
blushes, for the intro and down downs. Tom, leading the circle in GM Doug's
absence, had the brilliant thought to ask one of the girls (I don't know
Yoko or Aiko or Tojo, I mean really how can one track these things with
such numbers) what they did in the circle in Osaka. Well one of the girls
confessed that the initiation for new girls was shirts up for a topless
down down. WOW!! Tom is getting old but even he was quick to see potential
in this thought and quick as a wink he let the girls know that actually
this was the normal down down exercise for female visitors to the Hua
Hin Hash. "Lellly Tom San??" (the girls had been drinking a
bit). Yes dear, trust me. Well (as May and the Thai hash ladies edged
to the background) all the Five Samurai discussed this and agreed they
must observe local hash custom. Well on to the beers, up with the shirts
and there were all ten of them (I mean five but you know what I mean)
staring out at us, finally we caught our breath, into to the hash song
and the down downs commenced. Unfortunately the one nicknamed "Twin
Peaks" was a quick drinker but some of the lesser ladies lingered
a bit. In any case - YOU HAD TO BE THERE! The circle closed, Thai food
at the Silver Spoon and the Five Samurai wanted to be shown the Hilton
Pub and on into the evening. You will have to ask the younger guys about
that. Good Run, but the best circle in H2H3 history. If you missed this
don't miss the next opportunity. when GM Doug will be back and hopefully
the Five Samurai too!
Hash Run #23 Saturday 15 June 2002 Hare: Don
The Horse Farm
Well after last months run I hesitate to say that this run, set by new
member Don had everything, since the lovely Five Samurai didn't return,
but it had nearly everything. The area of the run was up the road past
Wat Bo Fai across from the Anantara. Our new member delivered a bit of
everything, we had the horse farm, which I highlighted as I was completely
unaware it was back in there snuggled against the hills, the Golden Buddha,
fantastic Chinese ancestral tombs, multicolored "Flame of the Forests"
blossoms, eucalyptus plantations, Coconut Palm plantations, Bamboo forest,
black swans and, for the real bird-watching fans, a pair of Lessor Racquet
tailed Drongos! In short the hare delivered not just a great run, which
it was, but a tapestry of never-ending changing scene of what nature bestowed
upon Hua Hin and carefully unfolded, like the tales in the Buddhist scripture,
to the lucky runners who made it for his run. Bravo Don!
The smallish pack of 17 (including two visitors Wendy (looong legs and
tight running shorts explained why many of the lads had trouble passing
her on the run and Rod from Little Sai Wan hash in Hong Kong), started
off on time making towards the Chinese temple and the Golden Buddha. Frequent
checks kept us together with May leading the way at most points. The horse
farm and the black swans came first and then, away from the hills around
the Chinese Cemetery, VERY ornate ancestral tombs all correctly and majestically
sited overlooking water of course according to "Feng Sui". May
continued to lead the pack showing a most unusual sense of direction.
After a turn though the plantations and bamboo the hare, who was along
for the run but not sweeping as he should have been, was observed covertly
pointing out the trail route to visitor Wendy and May??!! BAD FORM this
catering to the hash ladies and down downs to follow. Finally back to
our usual cow paths and on in after 55 minutes with Tom leading the way
for a change and May the first lady as usual. All the pack back five minutes
later. A great run in a very nice area we thought we knew but in which
we found many surprises on this day. The circle and down downs featured
our Chinese lass Wendy, who didn't go for the topless visitors gambit
we had enjoyed with the Five Samurai, and her English boyfriend Rod. It
was fine just having Wendy in the Circle though Rod kept smiling and stumbling
in the way as if he was necessary (twit). By the way you couldn't guess
Rod's hash name could you? These Hash people are so boringly predictable.
Speaking of hash names our hare Don, amidst his down downs, corrected
us that his hash name is "Ball Breaker", of course, it seems
I remember "Ball Buster" is the new GM of the Bangkok harriettes,
may she reign forever.
Any way, great run, great circle, most departed quickly for home to catch
England and Denmark on the TV though Don invited a select few non football
fans to the "Coconut" for the usual On On.
Don't miss the H2H3 2nd anniversary run on the 13th of July. Yes, we are
2 years old and we should have the whole family together including Grand
Master Doug, who has enough of the on-shore, off-shore routine in the
Middle East.

Circuit length: 5.14 km
No of laps: 60
Race distance: 308.296
Lap record: Mika Hakkinen (FIN), 2001, McLaren, 1min 23.405
History
Silverstone is owned and operated by the British Racing Drivers Club and
opened for racing in 1948 using the runways and service roads of a wartime
airfield. The outline is still visible, but constant development and massive
investment have made the circuit the brand leader in the sport.
Revisions to the circuit, enhanced safety precautions, new pits and a
redeveloped paddock complex are just part of the success story.
Silverstone hosted the first-ever round of the world championship in 1950
and is one of only two circuits to host a championship race consistently
since then.

History
Circuit De Nevers is a typical modern racetrack. It was opened to grand
prix in 1991 following a massive upgrading of the old club racing circuit.
The then French President Mitterand took a keen interest in the project,
as it took riches into a largely rural environment.
Facilities are excellent and the actual circuit is a mix of slow corners
and tight hairpins.
Take the chance to call in at the Ligier F1 museum and see 16 cars together
with various other team memorabilia and photographs.
Also the Motor Sports Museum opened in the Autumn of last year with its
first major display - depicting Renault's Centenary of Motor Racing.

History
Hockenheim is one of the longer world championship circuits. It is extremely
fast with two distinct sections - the stadium complex with the track twisting
in front of the grandstands and pit/paddock area, and then the flowing
section through the forest. Chicanes have been added but this is a very
fast and exciting circuit, demanding also in terms of car set-up.
Hockenheim was originally built for testing Mercedes cars and the atmosphere
is tremendous, especially when German drivers are doing well. The circuit
has hosted the German Grand Prix every year since 1986.
