Clubmaking

By Mick Wittering
This is the second in the series of question and answers that I have featured in The Asian Golf Monthly magazine
1)What is the major difference a player can expect between a Steel shaft and a Graphite shaft?
Many players incorrectly believe that graphite is more flexible than steel this is a misconception in that steel shafts can be made just as flexible as graphite.
There are 3 major differences between graphite and Steel shafts
* Weight - Graphite shafts are lighter than steel and as a result will allow the player to swing the club with a slightly higher swing speed, and gain extra distance. The lighter weight of graphite is a major advantage with over length clubs, especially the long driving clubs.
Standard steel iron shafts range between 125 -119 gms. With the newer 2000 range of Rifle lite and Dynamic Gold Lite which break the 110-gm. mark. Interestingly enough one of the lightest steel shafts on the market is the Wilson Fat Shaft series. Graphite shafts range in weight from 80-90 gm professional weights, 75-80 light weights to the 60-75gm super-lites and 45-55gm. feather weights. As a general rule of thumb for every 9gms of shaft weight, a club will increase or decrease 1 swing weight point. In other words if you replace your 127gm Dynamic Gold shaft with a 46-gm. Grafalloy Power Lite this would reduce your swing weight by 8.5 points. Which would allow you to extend the club by 1.5" and maintain the same Swingweight at the same time reducing total weight by 79gm. or approx. 20%. The extra length and increased arc combined with the lighter weight will certainly increase distance, but beware can you keep it on the fairway?
* Accuracy - In general terms graphite is not as accurate as steel, this would not effect the 20 handicapper and above but it can be quite important for the lower handicap golfer. Graphite manufacturers produce heavier graphite shafts for the touring pros that have lower torque.
* Vibration dampening - Traditional steel shafts are now offered with vibration dampening however this is one of the major advantages of graphite shafts. If a player suffers from tennis elbow, arthritis, shoulder or joint problems then graphite or some form of vibration dampening can be an advantage, you might note that Greg Norman has been using graphite in his irons since his recent shoulder operation.
