Clubmaking by Mick Wittering

"Distance is not the problem, it's finding the ball in the woods which is a pain."
"Let me look at your swing and I'll see what I can do."
This was the start of a conversation which led me to buying a new set of clubs from Mick Wittering of Custom Clubmakers. Mick is one of only a handful of Grade A clubmakers in Asia, an other is his partner Barry Harris based in Hong Kong.
Fitting for new clubs is a mix of high tech equipment and many years experience. Fortunately Mick has both.
To the untrained eye my swing looks like a gorilla competing in the highland games, but to Mick's experienced eye it looks like a .... well you get the picture.
Golfers swing speeds, accuracy of hitting and percentages are shown on the computerised equipment installed on the rooftop practice area at Hua Hin Golf Centre where Mick works. It's Micks job to find a head, shaft and grip, put them together and get the best out of some pretty irregular hitting.
If you need more consistency, Mick has the club for you, if you need greater distance, again those extra yards can be achieved.
My own clubs . . . well after a couple of nightmare rounds it all started coming together, the ball was going where I aimed it, and there was a lot less time hunting in the bushes, just as Mick promised!
If you consider when Tiger Woods changes his driver and a host of amateur golfers rush out and buy the same name. Ernie Els changes his irons and the same happens. Do we really believe the top brand name clubs in the hands of touring professionals are the same as the ones available to us hackers?
Do golfers believe that by hitting the same clubs as their heros they will play like them? Probably not, but there is a certain feel good factor.
The brand name clubs are especially fitted for the star players, so why not get that "feel better factor" and get your next new set of clubs fitted for you?
The cost is obviously a determining factor in selecting a new set of clubs, and surprisingly having custom fitted clubs will work out cheaper than "off the peg" top brand names.
You can find Mick at Custom Clubmakers, 2nd Floor Hua Hin Golf Centre Building, 13-13/2 Selakam Road, Hua Hin. Tel 032 530 119, 032 531 096-7, or email: mick@huahingolf.com
