This month's golf news and features

ANNUAL FAMILY trip is brought forward. Due to the uncertain weather in September our Lovers Away outing has been scheduled for 21st April with three tournaments one at Mission Hills and two at Nichigo in the Kanchanaburi area, including 2 nights at the River Kwai Hotel. The total cost for e4ach member golfer is 3,000 baht, which includes transport, accommodation, green fees, caddies, prize money and of course 2 breakfasts. Visitors will be welcome if all the places are not filled by 14th April, at a cost of 5,000 baht per golfer.
PATTAYA GENTLEMEN’s Excursion. This has been provisionally set for 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th of July.
HOLE IN ONE. Trevor Firth who has been a guest of the society for the last few months achieved his ambition at Unico Golf Club in Bangkok, using a pitching wedge over the 107 yards of hole no. 12.

A Scam on the Greens

So you stay in Hua Hin for a few days, huh? And, of course, you came for golf, didn’t you?
Got dinner at the hotel for the first days but now, it is time to go out and explore the heart of the city.
Well, I bet that you will soon meet some foreign residents, living and working here.
“How interesting!” will you say. Wouldn’t you like to do the same, one day?
There you start a very enjoyable conversation…
“What? You play golf too? What a coincidence! Well, we should play together. What about tomorrow?”
For you who knows no one here, it’s a godsend.
“What? Here in Thailand, one play for money? Oh, thank God, just a few hundred baht, on the front nines, the back nines and the whole play…”
“What the hell!” will you say, “let’s have fun!”.
The problem comes when announcing your respective handicaps. As you always thought that golf was a sport for gentlemen, you announce your real and latest handicap.
Well, be sure that your new friend will systematically raise his true handicap by 4 or 6!
For sure, you will loose this game, let me tell you! And for sure, you will leave a few hundreds baht on the table at the 19th! You might be naïve enough to pay for the drinks on top of it.
Still, you do not see the scam: the guy could have been lucky that day, you were not having a good day, did not know the course, etc, etc. Anyway, you will not stay long enough to understand that you have been had!
It was just a few hundreds baht for you! But for our friend resident, playing every day, that is 10 to 15,000 Baht a month! Not bad, and tax exempted, needless to say…
Well, if you are “kindly” invited to play a round with a resident who suddenly developed strong affective bonds with you: Beware! Go for it, but do not hesitate to give yourself not less than 10 strokes, just in case! As one say in French: “A malin, malin et demi” (there’s always someone who will outwit you).
A last thing, would you like to play with residents in a safe and fair manner? Do not hesitate if you are invited by a member and within a competition of Hua Hin Golf Society. (See more about it, further in this publication)
