SEPTEMBER F1
14th Italian at Monza
Course Details: Circuit length: 5.77 km No of laps: 53 Race distance:
305.772 km
Lap record: Rubens Barrichello, Ferrari, 2002, 1min 23.657
History: The original banked track built in 1922 has long since been abandoned,
with the modern Monza boasting fast sweeping corners and long straights.
Some of the corners have been tightened a little in the interests of safety
in recent years and chicanes have been brought into play.
Monza is the real home of the Italian Grand Prix, which has been staged
here every year but one since 1950, and the "tifosi" or fans
add to the unique atmosphere.
28th USA at Indianapolis
Course Details: Circuit length: 4.195 km No of
laps: 73 Race distance: 306.235 km
Lap record: Rubens Barrichello, Ferrari, 2002, 1min 12.738
History: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit makes its Formula One
debut as host this year, the first U.S Grand Prix since 1991 in Phoenix
which was quoted by Martin Blundell as being “the biggest disaster
ever.” In a country where sport is dominated by football, basketball
and the like, nobody knew where it was, and as a consequence only a small
number of spectators attended.
However, Indianapolis Speedway officials believe that this track will
attract up to 150,000 spectators. This circuit has a long spanning history,
attracting thousands of American fans every week, which is why the IMS
believe that this is the perfect venue to attract Americans to Formula
One.
The Indianapolis track is in the record books for holding the oldest automobile
race in America, which opened in 1909 and became host to the Indianapolis
500 in 1911, the latest winner being Kenny Brack in 1999.
Former World champion, Jacques Villeneuve is no stranger to the Indy car
circuit, having won the Indy 500 and PPG Cup in 1995. However, Formula
One stars with high profiles such as Villeneuve will provide something
of a culture shock to the American fans, with wages higher than some American
football stars and team annual budgets peaking at $100 million. Speedway
will have to work very hard to attract the same glamour that is attached
to other F1 circuits. |
