History of Muay Thai Pt.III - Hua Hin Heroes
As promised in the issue before, this month' article
will be dedicated entirely to the Hua Hin Thai boxing scene.
Coincidentally, the first Muay Thai Champion of Thailand was born in Hua
Hin, he trained in Hua Hin and lived here until he moved to Pattaya one
year before his death 16 years ago. His name is Porn Ging Ped and his
statue stands on the site currently being developed next to the Red Cross
Centre to honour him for his effort and courage.
Still today, there is a local boxingcamp in town which produces high talented
boxers who all fight in Bangkok's major stadiums, Lumpinee and Rachademnern.
At 'Sitchaupo", two of these talents are the famous twin-brothers
Pet-eg and Pet-tho, born in Nakhon sri Thammarat in 1981 but moved to
Hua Hin in 1986 after their parents' divorce. These guys are really something
special. Not only because they look so handsome, having fought both more
than 400 fights(!!), but also because they are intelligent, funny, and
very shy. Pet-tho once filled in a flyer to participate in the movie 'Beautiful
Boxer', he was invited for a screen test but was too shy to do it.
Anyway, since I train with them and got to know them really well, I must
say I seldom met 2 youngsters so eager and so multi-talented. Eager, because
once I phoned Pet-tho and asked him what he was doing on that beautiful
afternoon. "Reading a book", he answered. ,,About what?"
I asked him again, ''About World Civilization" he answered. And multi-talented
because while Pet-tho is learning as much as his profession allows him
to, his brother is busy excelling in 3 different sports. Apart from winning
a Lumpinee belt, he won the Prachuap Khiri Khan-Provence Marathon last
year, and last summer he was member of a soccer team, together with his
brother, and won the district finals. On the other hand, Hua Hin offers
4 weekly matches for less experienced fighters. Tuesdays and Fridays at
Mr. Chop Rawee's Thai Boxing Garden on Poonsuk Road, opposite the Temple.
Thursdays and Sundays at the Grand Sports on Petchkasem Road, next to
Sao Paulo Hospital. Assisted by Ajarn Singh, a local Muay Thai master,
Jorne and Lisa Rissanen from Finland succeeded to put Grand Sports on
the local Thai boxing map. Not only real fights can be seen here, sometimes
they offer a very funny show-fight similar to American Wrestling, or two
teenagers fighting each other blindfolded! Check out the posters for both
TBG's and Grand Sports programmes, matches start at 9 p.m. and if interested
in learning Muay Thai, send an E-mail to Fightclub27@hotmail.com.
